I was provided a copy of this book from Zondervan in exchange for my honest opinion. Could you imagine living next to a bunch of rowdy pirates? In Pirates on the Farm, written by Denette Fretz and illustrated by Gene Barretta, that is just what happens! This children's story feeds the imagination of your child as they discover what happens when pirates move in next door to a calm quiet southern family. Do you think that they will fit in or be ousted? The book is very well written and illustrated, emphasizing how we should love our neighbors. Pirates on the Farm is the first book in The Next Door Series.

The description given, "Pirates on the Farm tells the tale of five brazen pirates who swap high seas adventures for life on a farm. Each member of the unadventurous Sanders family must choose how to respond to the pirates and their antics. Mother forms a Ban the Buccaneers Brigade, eight-year-old Joey imitates everything the pirates do, his older sister keeps her distance, and Dad quietly helps the outcasts find their "land legs."

If you child likes pirates, I would recommend this book. The book uses words a lot of pirate terms that children who like pirates would know. If not, there is a definition area in the back. It is a cute book and my 4 year old keeps bringing to me to read to him. It teaches how you should treat your neighbor and gives examples on how to make them feel welcomed. It is a cute book. I would recommend this book to a pirate loving child. Thank you to booksneeze reading program for this book in exchange for my honest review

Pirates next door? My 3 year old thinks that would be great! But the neighbors in this story were not so sure. These were no ordinary neighbors. The pirates were out of place when they took over this farm. The mom was definitely not in favor of having them right next door. In fact, the whole town wasn't too sure. But the father is a good neighbor as he helps them learn to shear sheep and plant seeds, etc. He sits by them in church. He is an example to all, especially his family, of how God wants us to love and treat others.

It was a very fun book to read with my son who seems to love pirates easily :)! In the back of the book are some "seadog definitions" along with a discussion guide to parents to use this story. It would make a great gift for many boys like my son.

(I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their booksneeze.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.)

Denette Fretz has written a cute story about a band of thieving pirates who move next door to the Sanders family. Through the book the pirates look and act as typical pirates do - and the fun is in seeing how pirates act on a farm with neighbors watching.

But it isn't a book about the pirates learning to conform, or the pirates learning to be "good" - rather it's about the Sanders family learning to accept these ruffians as they are - barnacles and all.

This is a wonderful tale of "loving your neighbors as yourself" (Mark 12:31) The book has beautiful artwork and is filled with funny pirate speak (which is all explained in the back)

My son LOVES pirates and he has several books of pirates getting into funny and precarious adventures - this book will make a fine addition on his shelf.

Thank you to Zondervan and ZonderKidz

    Pirates on the Farm

~ The Next Door Series ~

    Written by Denette Fretz

    Illustrated by Gene Barretta

What would you do if a crew of pirates moved into the farm next door? What kind of neighbor would you be? Well, Pirates on the Farm looks at just such a situation from the perspective of the young girl on the farm next door.

With their swashbuckling ways the pirates next door make the town folk nervous. Dad and Joey are more than willing to help out their new neighbors while Mother was anything but pleased.

But when Joey invites their new neighbors over to celebrate the holidays everyone learns a lesson in being good neighbors and seeing how important it is to love our neighbors as ourselves. Take your young reader on an excursion that open their eyes to the importance of showing God's love to those around us, because what we give grows.

The illustrations and story will give you and your young reader an enjoyable reading experience. Some of the pirates antics are quite funny. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and this book is priceless with what it offers in the way of entertainment!

I was provided a copy of this book by DJC Communications and Zondervan in exchange for my honest review.
