Editorial Reviews

"Being somewhat of a science buff and puzzle lover, I enjoyed the two main characters and their chemistry and puzzle solving. I have enjoyed all of the books these ladies have coauthored, but I believe this one is my favorite. I cannot wait for the next book!"
—Liz Grider

"I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I am a huge fan of historical fiction, yet I did not know much about the Huguenots or that period in history. My Brother's Crown was well researched and gave lots of details about life in 17th century France."
Carol Clark

"My Brother's Crown did not disappoint. Love it when I read a book, that I'm drawn in by the present day mystery, yet learn something new as well."
Sherry Crockett

"Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould are gifted authors in their own right. But there is a certain kind of literary magic that occurs when the two collaborate on a novel. My Brother's Crown has left me begging for more!"
Susan Scott Ferrell

"My Brother's Crown is a fantastic read that kept me turning the pages even when I kept telling myself, 'I'll finish this chapter then put it down.' I ended up reading a lot more than one chapter in a sitting. I especially enjoyed the historical aspect and how seamlessly the authors tied it in with the present day story. This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend."
Kimberly Rose Johnson

"My Brother's Crown is absolutely brilliant! It is one of the best books that I have read in a really long time. Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould have delivered a masterful book with great characters—this collaboration is perfect! The storylines running back and forth from the past to present made for such an enjoyable read. I highly recommend it for anyone. The ending left me wanting more. Can't wait for book two!"
Christy Hayes

"I really enjoyed this book! I love historical fiction and this book did not disappoint me! Previously, I didn't know much about the plight of the Huguenots, so this intrigued me. I appreciate the authors sticking to the morals of the Christian faith when they were writing this book. They showed in many ways how we as Christians today, should live our lives in the great and small ways. I fell in love with the characters of this book and can't wait to read more of their story!"
Becky Waymire

"My Brother's Crown offers two stories in one novel, with the 18th-century saga of persecuted Huguenots entwining with the modern tale of mystery and family. These alternating adventures combine for a compelling read. We eagerly await the next book in the Cousins of the Dove series."
Mary Hake

    My Brothers Crown

    Review/Comments

This is the first book in the Cousins of the Dove Series. It is absolutely outstanding!!!!

These ladies have woven a brilliant historical novel depicting the Huguenots persecution and escape from France in the 1600s to present day Virginia through one incredible family-the Talbots. It was also unique how the authors focused on one lady, Catherine, from France and one, Renee, from Virginia to relate this story. Both were women of uncommon courage. Moreover, the story is so captivating I found it most difficult to put down as it contained everything needed in a great novel to keep you on the edge of your seat. There are volumes of history, unwavering faith, heroism, deception, the horrifying dragoons, a murder, birth, death, love, marriage, family relationshipsthe list goes on! We have so much to admire and learn from those, like the Huguenots that have come before us and the persecution, etc. that they went through and survived for their faith.

I cant wait for the next book in the series to appear, My Sisters Prayer, to discover and join the next generation of Talbots as they come to America in the latter 1600s/ early 1700s coupled with more about the murder in the cabin in the Dark Woods in present day Virginia!

My Brother's Crown combines modern day happenings in Virginia with a story from France in the 1600's. The connection is shown in an intriguing and detailed way. I learned a lot about the history of the Hugenot's. Characters Catherine Gillet and Renee Talbot lived in different time periods, yet, there seems to be a bond that is unfolding in the story.

People who are strong in their faith and are persecuted for their beliefs was happening long ago and is happening today.

There is much to be learned from reading this great story. I look forward to the next book in the series.

My Brother's Crown is the first book in a new series, Cousins of the Dove, by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould. It is a page turner! There are two stories that unfold in this book. One story follows a Huguenot family facing persecution in seventeenth century France, and the other story follows modern day descendants of that Huguenot family.

I enjoyed the dual storyline format. The two stories complemented and enhanced each other. It was neat to see how the faithfulness of the Huguenot family in France affected their descendants for years to come.

Before reading My Brother's Crown, I did not know much about the Huguenots and the persecution they suffered years ago. This book has helped me to better understand their lives and history in France.

My Brother's Crown is a great fiction book. There is mystery, suspense, and a bit of romance, and there are important historical lessons as well. This is a book series I will continue to read!

This is the first in a series of books detailing a particular family of Huguenots and their struggle to remain true to their faith in a time in history they were severely persecuted.

This one takes place in both the present day and the seventeenth century. I especially enjoyed the latter part of the book. Detailed and rich in history, the story of Catherine and her family's struggle to escape the persecution leveled their way because they did not want to remain in the Catholic faith.

The present day portion of the book was good, too. The same family. But there is much to discover from Catherine's time. The only part I didn't like was this: (SPOILER ALERT) The authors go into the mystery of the Dark Woods, but the reader is never given the answer to this mystery. I would have liked to have known what happened in that cabin. Maybe they will tell us in the next book.

*I was provided a copy of this book by the publishers in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own.

Renee Talbot is a brilliant scientist whose family has held a rare document for generations. Now, with her grandfathers recent death, the family abides by his wishes and contacts the Smithsonian to donate the document. The document is a pamphlet written by French Huguenots for persecuted Huguenots to flee the country via hidden messages in poems and maps hidden in drawings. Renee also discovers some hidden symbols, but is unsure if they have any meaning or not. Blake Keller has been given the job of making sure the document stays safe and secure until handed over to the Smithsonian. He helps Renee decode the hidden symbols as well as put an event in the past into perspective.

Catherine Gillet is a French Huguenot in 1685 under the reign of King Louis XIV, the Sun King. He has begun countrywide persecution of Huguenots, sending dragoons to hassle them, stealing their homes, burning their churches and even torturing and killing them all in an attempt to get the Huguenots to convert to Catholicism. As Catherine and her family face more and more persecution, she begins to doubt her brothers faith as well as wondering why he refuses to leave France and flee to safety in another country. Her fianc, Pierre Talbot, also seems to blindly follow whatever her brother says, which serves to frustrate Catherine further. What will it take to get her brother to move their family to safety? Who has turned traitor and begun turning Huguenots over to the dragoons for profit?

I liked the switching back and forth of the chapters from modern time to the past. I thought the authors did a good job of keeping the flow of the story cohesive with this technique. Blake and Renee are my favorite characters. I could easily relate to Renees struggle with how she viewed herself, especially when she compared herself to her cousins. Blake was such a compassionate and caring man right off the bat in his dealings with Renee that he won my admiration. I thought the character of Jules was cold and unfeeling, even though he had his familys best interest in mind when making decisions. Catherine seemed at times to be spoiled and immature, but she did have a caring heart for her cousin and matured some toward the end, placing her trust in God. I also enjoyed reading about the Huguenots, a people whom I knew next to nothing about. I look forward to book two in the series, My Sisters Prayer.
