"There's a lot going on, both in the current timeline and from Nicki's past, to keep the reader turning the pages with plenty of fun banter and toe-clenching romance. Read it!"
Pegg Thomas, thesheepishscribe.blogspot.com
"As with all of Mary Ellis' novels, Midnight on the Mississippi will keep you turning pages chapter after chapter. Detailed descriptions lend credence to the plot. Well-developed characters are totally believable. Nicki's wry sense of humor and down-home expressions make her as lovable as your best friend. If you enjoy suspense, romance, and a touch of humor, you won't be disappointed in Mary Ellis' new novel."
Susan Simpson, author
"I had a hard time putting this book down to get anything done. The characters are imperfect but human. As in other books by Mary Ellis, you get to know the characters and their surroundings, as if you are an active bystander. This is because the author takes pains to learn about the area she uses as the background so even dialogue, music, and foods served are pitch-perfect."
"Author Mary Ellis continues to amaze me with her versatilitynot only is she a master of the Amish genre, but also of historical romance, and now, with Midnight on the Mississippi, of romantic suspense. There were so many twists and turns in this book that I couldn't put it down and devoured the book in just three reading sessions. Her characterization is amazing and spot-on, and her portrayal of New Orleans and the bayou culture is so well-done that by the time I finished the book I wanted to be in New Orleans eating an beignet. Bravo, Ms. Ellisplease keep these great books coming!"

"Midnight on the Mississippi was a book that I had to keep reading. Putting the book down was not easy. I enjoyed every minute."

How does a wealthy securities broker find himself accused of murdering his long-time friend and business partner? If an individual tends to go along for the sake of getting along, how well does that work? When that involves overlooking the questionable activities of the business partner and letting family and friends push him into an engagement with someone he does not love, it could spell disaster. Hunter Galen does not want to rock the boat and Nicki Price seems to rock every boat she encounters as she speaks her mind regardless of who she is with. As events unfold, you get the feeling that more trouble is just around the next corner. On several occasions as I was reading, I found myself talking to the characters, trying to tell them not to go there or not to take a particular action. Funny thing is they would not listen to me. As Hunter learns more about his partner, he wonders if his partner would still be alive if he would have confronted him. My perspective is that something would have happened to him regardless, but maybe Hunter would not have been the suspect. I enjoyed the story and look forward to reading the other books in this series.

Review: Great start to a new series!!! Doesn't take to long to get into the murder. It made me think that about coming upon something illegal and even though you report it does no mean that person doesn't get pegged for it. I really enjoyed Nikki and some of the other underlying events that were going on. For me that kept the suspense going without it being too intense. I always like to be kept waiting for the who did it and this one did not disappoint. I really am hooked on this series. Looking forward to finishing the second book and to start the third book!!!

christiangirl4evr2 Stars Out Of 5Midnight on the MississippiFebruary 27, 2016christiangirl4evrQuality: 2Value: 2Meets Expectations: 1I was expecting alot from this book. The reviews were really good. This is the first book by Mary Ellis that I've read, and it will be the last. There really is no mystery or intrigue. The entire story is supposed to be about solving a murder but in all reality it is about Hunter breaking up with his fiancee and falling in love with Nicki. They don't do much sleuthing, more eating, dancing, and going to parties. Things happen randomly and the story doesn't take you on a journey to resolve the mystery. The "who done it" comes out close to the end with an explanation of how they arrived at it. Some of the characters are a bit over the top and makes it not as believable. She also uses alot of French words and phrases that only about 1/2 are explained what they mean. I'm not a fan of that. This is also supposed to be a Christian book and I can count on one hand how many times God, prayer, and faith was used in the book in the first 300 pages. For the last 45 pages, there is about a handful more (and a cuss word somewhere in the middle). My idea of a Christian book has God woven throughout and I didn't find that in this book. If you like a good "relationship" story, then you will like this book. It just wasn't for me.
Seasons of GraceAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5An Exciting Read You Won't Want to Put DownJanuary 7, 2016Seasons of GraceAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Thrilling, nerve-racking, often intense, are just a few of the words I am using to describe this novel. Hunter Galen, a well-known business man, high society name in New Orleans, finds his partner dead. And to top it off, guess who is being accused of committing the crime. Even after suspecting that his partner, James, may have been up to know good, Hunter tried to ignore it, until now. James was his friend - or was he?
Nicki Price, country gal from Mississippi, is direly in need of a job. With her recently acquired PI license, and hopefully soon to be acquired carrying permit, she barges her way into her cousin's New Orleans office demanding to be hired. When her plans go a bit amiss, she weasels her way into her cousins newest case - Hunter's murder of his friend James- using her PI skills or ... something like that. To the amazement of both Hunter and her cousin, she is actually pretty good at investigating. So good, she is rubbing people the wrong way, and finds herself in danger numerous times.
Will they discover who the real killer is before someone else gets killed? Full of twists and turns, surprises, and a few narrow escapes, Mary Ellis takes you on a thrilling roller coaster ride of adventure. This is my first Mary Ellis book. For me it was a quick read, once I got started. Honestly, I had a hard time putting it down, and found myself often reading when I really should have been doing other "more important" things. I totally enjoyed this book. The plot, as well as, the subplot were extremely well written. And I was somewhat surprised at the end result. Mary definitely kept me guessing.
I was blessed with this book by the Harvest House Publishers in exchange for my honest review. I am not required to review the book in a positive manner.

She is from very rural Mississippi and he is from New Orleans. His family is very wealthy while hers is poor. When they first meet, Nicki is trying to land her first big case as a newly minted private investigator with Hunter as her first client. Actually, her cousin owns the detective agency and she pleads with him to let her be his assistant. Her cousin Nate has worked for Hunter for several years and when Hunter is a suspect in a murder, Nate is on the job. However, someone gets Nate arrested so he is off the job, leaving Nicki in the drivers seat. Nicki is also investigating on her own time the death of her father seventeen years ago. She knows he wasnt all that good of a father, but he was the only one she had so she wants to know what happened on that night long ago.
As Nicki now leads her first paying case, she follows the money to try to discover who might want to kill Hunters business partner and friend. Hunter is the number one suspect, but Nicki knows Hunter is innocent. Hunter researches his partners financial records and business dealings, finding out things about his friend he never thought possible. Hunter also is coerced into an engagement with his girlfriend that he is not quite ready for, but doesnt want her to be embarrassed so he agrees. However, something doesnt sit right with him. He has spent a lot of time with Nicki and wants to spend more time with her. He doesnt care whether she is rich or poor. His current fiance is very focused on money and her style of living in society. Is she really the right woman for him?
The story has a good plot and enough action to keep readers interested from beginning to end. I really liked the character of Nicki. She says what she is thinking without sugarcoating things. She is honest, a hard worker, goes the extra mile and is God-fearing. Nicki also has a great sense of humor and has no illusions about where she is from and who she is. Her trust lies with the Lord. Im looking forward to the next book in the series. This is a book that is easy to read and one that will entertain.
