I love this historic romance set in the late 19th century. What an exciting read! I think I held my breath through half the story, wondering how each scene was going to play out.

Amaryllis Brigham is a complex character, whose life has been molded by unfortunate circumstances and misunderstandings. Her lack of guidance and friendships during her teen and young adult years appear to be a decided disadvantage, when thrust into a world of which she has little experience. I shook my head many times as her penchant for interrupting others left her with faulty understanding of the situation. Overall, Amaryllis is a strong, but vulnerable character that I like very much.

Nathan Everstone is an extremely complex character, who is difficult to understand. He is not only a complete mystery to Amaryllis, but also to the reader, as the story is told from her point of view. This somewhat unique perspective, in my opinion, adds to the mystique of the romance. There are quite a few interesting characters, and what would a Victorian novel be without the villain?

There is a strong spiritual element concerning Gods ultimate plan for a persons life, and a sweet prayer that is such a lovely surprise.

This is a great story. Im looking forward to the next book in the series. If you enjoy historical romance, The Hesitant Heiress is a spot-on choice.

The Hesitant Heiress by Dawn Crandall, 2014

    The Everstone Chronicles, Book One

Theres no contest when it comes to my judging the truth of this letter. You are a young woman with an unknown past, no relatives, and now a very trustworthy account from Bram Everstone against you.

It took only a moment to understand what was happening. The professor would, because of some slanderous letter, believe the worst of me.

MeAmaryllis Brigham, whose most fervent desire was to be good.

    --The Hesitant Heiress, 6

I was drawn by her name ~* Amaryllis *~

    Chapter One excerpt: http://whpub.whitakerhouse.com/dawncrandall/heiress.html

So... Amaryllis starts off on her own journey, not of her own making. And she indeed has a relative! Great-Aunt Claudine ~ nothing like her stuffy niece, Amaryllis' mother.

At the introduction of the gentlemen in the story, I take note that one has a private railcar!

Can you imagine the luxury of having your own home on rails to couple to the end of a train heading in your destination? That would be one Nathan Everstone, whom Amaryllis has yet to meet. Humph ~ a relative of the letter writer that got her expelled from The Boston Conservatory, no less. A close relative at that ~ his despicable father, Bram Everstone, being the author of the unsound fallacy. Nathan is on the list before he has even started, it would seem.

Has Amaryllis come to an impasse? Trapped in her remembrances that lead her in fear without being able to go forward? Measuring her responses or lack of by what she has always known keeps her locked in without a way of escape. This story is so well written in showing how a life can be turned from self-doubt and repression to be able to hear truth and reception. Dawn Crandall has expressed a life capable of freedom from lies of the enemy of our soul. The deception can stop by a love greater than we have ever known.

Nathan pursues Amaryllis devotedly overlooking what she doesn't yet see. She is protected. She is viewed by others so differently than she sees herself. Weaknesses are pried upon by those weaker yet than Amaryllis. She is determined to go it alone regardless of the outcome, being strengthened by her aim to follow her gift of music. Wait until she finds the music of her soul! Her heart awaits her patiently, opening the small crevices that form the shell enclosing it. How beautiful is the revealing and the hope presented in the pursuit of a love beyond measure. Freed by the very person she feels entombs her, guilt is set aside and flooded with joy and release for all generations to come.

It is 1890, and Amaryllis Brigham is a talented musician, but a slanderous letter from the rich influential Bram Everstone ends her study at the Boston Conservatory of Music, and sends her to the home of her Aunt Claudine. Here she is reintroduced to her childhood friend, cousin Lawry Hampton, and his friends, Jay Crawford and Nathan Everstone Brams son.

Amaryllis discovers she is a rich heiress, but she must marry in order to claim her inheritance. She has no desire to marry, yet the money would enable her to return home to her beloved Whidbey Island, Washington, and establish a music school. Logic would dictate that the handsome Jay would make the ideal husband, as hes a preacher in search of a wife to accompany him to fulfil his call to preach in Washington. Yet Amarillys finds herself attracted to Nathan, the son of the man who has ruined her life in more ways than one.

The Hesitant Heiress is written in the first person, which is an unusual choice for a historical romance, but it works. So many of the characters are hiding secrets, and first person enables the reader to uncover those secrets slowly, and means they have the same element of surprise to us as they do to Amaryllis. I liked that, as it added to the suspense.

This story has it allfascinating characters, secret love, obsession, suspense, loads of romantic tension, and a few rather fabulous kisses. I thoroughly enjoyed The Hesitant Heiress. The only thing I didnt like was the teaser for the sequel, because now Im going to have to wait months to find out what happens. Recommended for fans of historical romantic suspense from authors such as Colleen Coble.

Author Dawn Crandall is a master at building romantic tension that keeps you turning pages to the very end. Pair that with a dreamy hero and the beauty and grace of the Gilded Age and you have a can't miss inspirational romance. The Hesitant Heiress is a great start to the Everstone Chronicles series, proving Dawn Crandall is an Author to watch. I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
