nkwbookreviewer5 Stars Out Of 5Christian Crime MysterySeptember 7, 2016nkwbookreviewerQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4Drawing Fire by author Janice Cantore is Book One in her Cold Case Justice Series. This Christian contemporary crime suspense is published by Tyndale and is a 416 page paperback. The author is a retired police office giving her experience in her subject matter. She states that during the course of her uniformed career faith was indispensable in every aspect of it.
Drawing Fire is the story of Abby Hart, a police detective, and a case that has been unsolved for almost thirty years. It is a cold case now. It is also the tale of private investigator, Luke Murphy. He is someone that can help Abby with her cases and looking for a serial killer.
Abby's parents were murdered years ago and she was adopted by her aunt. She decided to go into homicide at the police department and has been mentored by the two policemen working her parents' murder case. This book has mystery, suspense, intrigue, action, and a bit of romance. The crimes are described with details and precision. The author definitely draws from her own police days.
The author has a great, interesting writing style. She hovers between past and present day. Her storyline is well researched, organized, and believable. It grabs readers and won't let go until the end of the book. This fast paced, action packed book has a heavy dose of twists and turns. It also has a great amount of inspiration and trusting God, which is essential for any Christian book. The characters are well defined and believable. It is easy to like some of them and not like others. The dialogue is smooth in this well written thrilling book. I became invested in the story and wanted to keep reading it to get answers.
This is a book that I would recommend for someone that likes contemporary suspense, crime novels. I rated it 4 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by The Book Club Network for my honest review.

JeaniePhoenix, AZAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Exciting and Suspenseful Christian Mystery!July 12, 2016JeaniePhoenix, AZAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Drawing Fire is the explosive first mystery in the Cold Case Justice series. If you havent read anything by this author yet, you are in for a delightful surprise! I always look forward to Janice Cantores novels, and this exceeded my anticipation. The author is very thorough in covering the details of the crimes and resolutions, and delivers surprise after surprise while the solutions are sought.
Abby Harts name was changed when her aunt adopted her in an effort to help protect her from the bad guys/ gals who murdered her parents in their highly successful restaurant many years ago. Whoever did the crime had almost taken her life when burning the restaurant, then also burned her familys home. Abby was now a homicide detective, having been mentored in the police department by the two officers still there from the day of the murders. She had been collecting all she could to work the cold case that her parents death had become.
Her newest case was the murder of the governors aunt. Woody, one of the cops who mentored her, knew the aunt as whenever she called in for prowlers or noisy neighbors and he responded, she would invite him to stay and visit. There was a witness to someone running from the home who called the police; Luke Murphy was a PI following up on a lead for one of his missing teen cases but was not able to see anything that would help identify the runner. Unfortunately, he was the best lead she had, and he was also someone who could help her with finding her parents killer(s). The governor is also someone who could help with that case, having been her parents business partner, but talking with him was almost impossible.
The author defines her characters through their conversations, actions, and at times their thoughts. I felt as if I knew Abby very quickly, learning more about her throughout. Luke is also someone the reader gets to know well. The secondary characters, including possible suspects, are described as necessary for their roles. I greatly admire Abby for the challenges she has met and is currently facing; she says that she is trusting the Lord with regards to solving her parents murder or her other cases, yet it seems that she tries to control the progress of those cases. Luke is a Christian also, someone who I see as stronger in faith than Abby and more willing to seek Gods will.
The storyline is excellent, a mixture of past and present as well as Lukes missing teen cases and Abbys homicide investigations. The murder of her parents and the fires that ripped apart her childhood was also a case that Luke had interests in. There are plot twists and suspense that can take ones breath away, and a primary spiritual lesson woven throughout without being preachy. I appreciated the diligence and integrity that motivated Abby and Luke through their professional lives. The ending was not anticipated; in many ways it was satisfactory and in other ways, sad. The bad guys/ gals were partly a surprise, yet ultimately it was flawlessly executed by the author and very satisfactory to this reader.
I highly recommend Drawing Fire for women of any age, possibly older teens as well, who appreciate Christian suspense that is well written with the potential for romance, and characters who are extremely likable and believable.
