Publisher's Description

All It Takes Is One Night
to Plunge the World into Darkness

Life in Abney, Texas, is predictable and safe—until the night a massive solar flare wipes out all modern technology.

Shelby Sparks, novelist and single mom, had one goal: to provide for her diabetic son. In the wake of this global disaster, her mission hasn't changed. Only now, medication is a priceless commodity and the future resembles an apocalyptic nightmare.

Max Berkman and Shelby were once sweethearts, but he lost his chance at claiming her love years ago. When the abrupt loss of power ushers him into a leadership role, he rises to the occasion. But his highest priority—to keep Shelby and her son safe—could prove to be the biggest challenge of all.

As the brilliant northern lights give way to deep shadows, Max and Shelby's faith will be tested like never before. Only one rule remains: Find a way to survive.

Editorial Reviews

"Vannetta Chapman begins a new series (The Remnant) with her newest book, Deep Shadows. With the flash of a solar flare, life for residents of a small Texas town is changed, perhaps forever. Such a believable and possible situation to write about and the author does a wonderful job of making this story credible....  With edge-of-your-seat suspense this is an intense, provocative book, causing readers to wonder about their own reaction and preparedness for a disaster of this magnitude."
Anne Rightler

"I write romance, but sometimes love reading books that are a little different. Deep Shadows definitely fits that description! As the subtitle promotes-The Remnant series, Book One-this book takes place after a catastrophic event that changes the world as we know it. A solar flare wipes out all modern technology and most of the power grid.  This story is about how the people of Abney, Texas try to survive.... And it ends with a cliffhanger, so you know there will be a book 2 and hopefully more. I plan to read them, how about you? Write fast, Vannetta Chapman!"
Rose Allen McCauley, author

"Deep Shadows, the powerful dystopian suspense first book of 'The Remnant Series' may keep you up at night. First, you'll be awake finishing the book, then in mental agitation over when the solar flare chaos will begin in reality. Award winning Vannetta Chapman excels in yet another writing genre."
Alan Daugherty, weekly columnist in The News-Banner

"Deep Shadows by Vannetta Chapman is a book like no other that I've read. With suspense and intrigue, Ms. Chapman weaves together a tale that caused me to stop and rethink everyday life."
Sharee Stover

"I'm so thrilled Chapman switched genres to write this story and even though there is sadness (towards the end, there was one tragedy that gripped my heart), there is also humor, faith, friendship and one small town in Texas who will stand together to make survival possible! I'm a sensitive reader, but I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy dystopian stories. Chapman's writing style is very unique and you won't be disappointed!"
Kara Grant

"I highly recommend this book to everyone. While I understand a deep topic such as a solar flare (which I learned are real - thank you Vannetta!) is not for everyone, I encourage you to try this with an open mind. Look at it as a book that shows how a community can try to come together during a crisis, or how a mother will do anything to save her son, or how a friendship is tested. You will not regret it!"
Jessica Baker

"Chapman's book is a suspenseful heart-pounding read.  But through it all, the message of God's grace is woven into the text.

Vannetta Chapman's foray into a different genre-Christian dystopian fiction, is a very successful venture.  Her in-depth research brings credibility as well as suspense to this novel.  If you would like to read a book that keeps you hanging on the edge of your seat, this is a great read for you!  I highly recommend Deep Shadows, it is a five star read!"
Patti Gallagher

"This is a story of survival and faith. Vannetta Chapman brings the story and the characters to life in such detail that I felt I was right there with the people in the story.... A wonderful book that I plan to read again."

Author/Artist Review

Author: Vannetta Chapman

Tell us a little about yourself.  My first book released in 2010, and Deep Shadows is my 14th novel (plus several novellas). I was a high school/college English teacher for 15 years, and now I write full time. My husband and I have 4 children, all grown, so we are empty nesters--though with 2 dogs, 2 cats, and a back yard full of deer the nest is hardly empty.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I love a good survival story, but it seems that even with the huge popularity of dystopian fiction that we are not seeing much written in this genre from the Christian perspective. My goal was to show one of these scenarios from the viewpoint of someone like you and me--normal folks who fall on their faith in times of trouble, but still have to stand back up and find a way to survive.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  That God's grace is always sufficient. Take the worst scenario that you can imagine, and you can still count on our Heavenly Father--maybe not to make it instantly better, but to lead, guide, and care for us.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I've started stocking my pantry a little better! And of course it forced me to look at my own doubts and fears. What would I do to protect my child? That was a recurring theme, and the answer is always the same--I can trust my heavenly Father regardless of the circumstance.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I listen to a lot of music while I'm writing--Chris Tomlin and David Crowder, to name two. While writing this book, Ted Koppel's "Lights Out" and Barbara Taylor's "An Altar in the World" were both very helpful.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Most of us are woefully unprepared for something like I describe in Deep Shadows, but we can learn, and we can change our habits, and we can trust on the grace and provision and love of God.
