Dawnsinger is a great fantasy story. The writing pulls you into the story with the desciptions, the characters, and how intriging the story line is. It was one book that was hard to put down! It incorporates many of the problems of today into the characters. I can't wait to read the next book.

I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

Dawnsinger by Janalyn Voigt was a true fantasy. From a brand new world and interesting creatures she created, to a riveting story line. I do admit that I did get confused in some parts with all the different types of animals and places I was not familiar with. However, there is rather an extensive glossary at the back of the book that provided me with a road map of sorts. This was a very interesting story and at times I had trouble coming back to the real world after reading it. I really liked her main characters Kai and Shae, but also her secondary ones like Aerlic, Gauron, Dorann, and Elcon. I was not expecting all the twists and turns and the adventure in the world she created was both magical and nightmarish. Some of the creatures gave me the shivers. I very much look forward to the second Tales of Faeraven especially after that ending. I can only hope that things start to look up in Fairhaven. And who is the mysterious Dawn King? I received this book from The Book Club Network, Inc. and the opinions are my own.

This is a tale filled with lands only imagined and characters both intriguing and terrifying. The land and everything the reader encounters is richly described to make everything seem quite imaginable and real. All fans of fantasy genres will be excited to become acquainted with the world of Faeraven.

The story is a typical fantasy, with much drama and strange occurrences. The characters are quickly brought into your heart so I found myself holding my breath many times while waiting to see how events would unfold! The author does an excellent job clarifying details and yet keeping enough intrigue to keep you reading. I was satisfied with the ending of this story, but hungry for the next portion of the tale! Luckily "Wayfarer" is now also available so the story can continue. I expect many more tales from this author to keep us abreast of happenings in this fantasy world.

At the request of Lof Raelein, High Queen Maeven, Shae, Princess of Whellein, flies off on Kai's wingabeast to be at the Queen's side as she lay ailing close to death. Amidst rumors of danger about the Welkes, giant creatures of prey, Kai and Shae risk their lives to be at Lof Raelein's side. Kai is a Guardian of Rivenn and Maeven's personal guard. He is also the known brother of Shae.

Secrets are unveiled, and Shae must make a dangerous trip to Lohen Keil to release the DawnSinger by singing Kunrat's song before the DayStar completes its arc of the sky, in order to save Elderland. Shae is accompanied by Kai and several other men of good report. Little do they know the dangers they will encounter-wraiths of the own making, spirit wraiths, waevens, giant garns, enchantments and other-worldly creatures, as well as evil men riding on the Welkes. They leave High Prince Elcon and the Kindren to ward off the enemy, Contender, in Toridan. Will Elcon be able to stand strong? Will Shae make it to Lohen Keil in time to save Elderland? And who is the identity of the Contender?

This was such an enchanting book with all the queer creatures set into action by the ultimate outcome that created the Contender. The fantastical wingabeasts used for flying long distances sound intriguing to ride and are given beloved names of endearment. The bloodcurdling war cries raise the hair on the back of your neck when you realize most of it takes place in the dark of night, with the surroundings filled with spirit wraiths, waevens and other dangerous creatures.

Murder, suspense, traitors, and danger keep the thrust of the story moving from beginning to end. In the midst of these tragedies, the author weaves romance into the story, as the beautiful Shae has the eye of not one, but three men, making for a wonderful romance theme except for the tactics of one of the suitors.

Shae's complete dependence on Lof Yuel through out the story brings the reality of Someone who is in charge of good times as well as evil and dangerous situations. Kai and his men also rely on Lof Yuel as they find the enemies stronger than themselves.

The author's use of life's paradoxes is integral to the story. Serving rather than being served, surrendering to Lof Yuel in order to gain victory, and commitment to the journey despite the hard times, to name a few. Though this book is fantasy, a genre I am totally beginning to love, it has spiritual undertones that we can all glean from-love, faith, dependence on God, sacrifice (persecution) in the face of adversity, etc. I enjoyed the connections of the people in the book to those in the Bible. Very well done!

My only complaint is that the glossary of names is in the back of the book instead of the front. This would have made the book easier to comprehend.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Janalyn Voigt

Submitted: November 13, 2012

Tell us a little about yourself.  My father instilled in me a love of literature at an early age by reading chapters from The Wizard of Oz, Robinson Crusoe and other classics. I soon began creating my own stories, and eventually began writing them down. A teacher noticed my storytelling ability when I was 12, and his encouragement helped me identify a desire to write novels. On my own initiative, I read dictionaries, grammar books, and encyclopedias to expand my knowledge base and to learn story structures and the elements of the writing. As an adult I completed more formal training through Christian Writers Guild.

DawnSinger, my debut and first novel in the Tales of Faeraven epic fantasy series, released with Harbourlight Books in June 2012. Other projects include a western historical romance series. I serve as a judge for several national literary contests and am an active book reviewer.

My affiliations include American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and Northwest Christian Fiction Writers (NCWA).

In my spare time I read, garden, and find adventures with my family in the great outdoors. I dream of owning a horse, exploring all the national parks, and visiting European castles.

What was your motivation behind this project?  DawnSinger sprang from a story I told on the spur of the moment to entertain my young daughter during a drive. Long after she'd forgotten the story, the world of Elderland and its people remained with me. I had to write their epic story. That was a process that took years and even brought me back after I (thought I) quit writing.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I offer escape from the drudgery of everday living into a world of beauty and danger. Being allegorical, DawnSinger also raises questions like what it means to surrender to God's will and when does honor supercede happiness.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  DawnSinger's message of sacrifice for the greater good has been the one I needed to learn myself to bring this novel to readers. Writing this book has strengthened my own resolve to live a life of honor.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  J.R.R. Tolkien's and C.S. Lewis's writings inspired me to write in the genre they helped create, although I have my own authorial voice. My training in opera, chamber singing, and musical theater influences my writing. When people describe my writing as lyrical or musical, I smile a little. At least right now, I don't sing outside of church, but I do sing with words.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I am available as a motivational speaker to church, women’s, and writer’s groups with messages both inspiring and practical. Visit my website.
