She tells the familiar story of the Exodus, but with a fresh perspective: Kiya, an Egyptian slave. I loved seeing the Hebrews, the plagues, leaving Egypt, etc. through Kiyas eyes, adding depth to stories I already knew. Every moment of Kiyas experience feels well-researched, and the author does an excellent job of vividly setting the scene, as well as exploring the development of faith. Her writing and storytelling grabbed my attention from the start, and I completely enjoyed reading Counted With the Stars. For fans of biblical fiction, this book is a must-read!
Thanks to Bethany House, I received a copy of Counted With the Stars and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
DollyNew MexicoAge: 45-54Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Fabulous & FascinatingJanuary 30, 2017DollyNew MexicoAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Viewing the fascinating history of plagues & the exodus through the eyes of a foreigner along with characters who stirred every possible emotion offered a depth of resonance not typical for a debut novel. As a teenager, the books I loved most were the ones where I stepped into the story & became the main character. As an adult this rare & intimate bond has been much harder to find. However, Connilyns writing style offered this wondrous experience. From the first scene, Kiyas plight grasped my interest & pulled me into ancient Egypt. Yet, many of the other actors were just as enthralling. When I met Shira I became captivated, along with Kiya, by her strength, kindness, & grace. Because of Connilyns expertise in crafting a three-dimensional cast, along with Kiya I was both fascinated by & fearful of Ebens fierce ruggedness, delighted by Liats lovable naivety, seared & then angered by Tekurhas wrathful jealousy, marveled at Jumos immeasurable value, & overwhelmed with Mosheshs (Moses) commanding yet compassionate nature. Most wonderful of all, Yahweh Himself inhabited these pages. As He wooed the evasive & skeptical Kiya, whose heart had been hollowed out by the false gods of her youth, His majestic & merciful love blossomed anew in those places where the weariness of this world had also emptied my soul. Still united with Kiya, the ending delivered fresh hope & healing along with a sigh of satisfaction. In the best kind of conclusion, Connilyn piqued my curiosity, left me anxious to continue this wonderful journey, & prompted heartfelt gratitude upon discovering there will be two additional books in this series. This fabulous story earned Connilyn a place in my must-read author list!
Inkwell Reviews5 Stars Out Of 5Review From inkwellreviews.comJanuary 1, 2017Inkwell ReviewsQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Counted with the Stars by Connilyn Cossette is a fascinating glimpse into the life of Kiya, an Egyptian who flees with the Israelites. The authors prose was lovely, the story was thought-provoking, and the Biblical narrative was portrayed in a way that honored Scripture. I found myself drawn into a world where the God of the Israelites protected and provided for His children in miraculous ways. This story sparked thoughts of my Gods faithfulness and greatness, both then and now.
Kiya, along with a host of other characters, were drawn with artistic strokes. Relatable and multifaceted, each character made me feel he or she could exist in my own world. The book follows the plagues of Egypt and ends before the golden calf is constructed, and each page is worth reading to glimpse a hint of the star-like beauty of the story. Although set in a backdrop of the darkest night, the lights shimmer like a candle flame in a tunnel.
I hope you enjoy reading this wonderful story.

The depth of the author's research is commendable and obvious as she weaves her tale against the backdrop of an ancient culture in bondage to false gods. I loved this novel not just for the characters and the plot, but for the way it made me grateful anew that we serve a loving God who demands no tribute, no sacrifice, but a contrite heart eager to reconcile with our Creator. Can't wait to read the rest of this series from Connilyn Cossette!

In all the times that Ive read the Biblical account of the plagues, not once do I recall wondering about the Egyptian perspective. This story completely intrigued and captivated me.
Kiya enjoys a life of comfort and ease as the daughter of a wealthy Egyptian businessman until he loses everything and sells her into slavery. Kiyas new mistress is determined to humiliate her but she doesnt break.
Then the plagues hit and what hope do the Egyptians have against the unknown and unseen God of the Hebrews? Kiya keeps putting one foot in front of the other, doggedly searching for a way to save herself and her family.
Welcome to the IMAX level story experience, reader friends!!! I encourage you to pick up this title and experience a richer understanding of the places and culture from the Exodus account.
