Product Description

Joyce Baldwin's commentary gives the reader an understanding of 1 and 2 Samuel's theological significance with sound exegesis and study. While excellent scholarship lies behind the commentary, it is written with the lay reader in mind.

The Tyndale Old Testament Commentary Series includes introductory material in each volume that briefly considers background questions, while succinct passage-by-passage commentary explains the text's meaning without entangling technical, theological, or grammatical controversies.

Publisher's Description

Recipient of a 1990 Christianity Today Critics' Choice Award! The stories of Samuel, Saul and David are among the most memorable in the Old Testament. Yet the lives of these individuals are wound up in the larger story of God's purpose for his people. Looking beyond the well-known surface of these stories Joyce Baldwin explores the meaning of the biblical history of Israel's vital transition from a confederation of tribes to nationhood under a king. Bible students at all levels will find that this commentary provides an excellent introduction to the critical issues of authorship, date, composition and structure of Samuel, as well as an able discussion of its theological themes. Written in a clear and straightforward style, here is a worthy addition to the acclaimed Tyndale Commentary series. The original, unrevised text of this volume has been completely retypeset and printed in a larger, more attractive format with the new cover design for the series.

Author Bio

Joyce G. Baldwin (B.A., B.D.) was principal of Trinity College, Bristol, and wrote several volumes in the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary series. She died in 1996.

Editorial Reviews

"The Tyndale volumes have long been the premier shorter-length commentary series on both Testaments throughout the English-speaking world."
"Tyndale commentaries are always useful, not least because they focus so clearly on the text of Scripture, and do not fall into the trap of paying too much attention to other commentaries and not enough to the scriptural text they are intended to expound and explain. So they retain their usefulness for preachers, Bible study leaders and for all readers of the Bible."
"Within its constraints, this series includes some outstanding volumes."
"There simply is no series of medium-length commentaries that approaches the excellence of the Tyndale commentaries."
