Product Description

Who would not be interested in the story of a man who showed tremendous potential as a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, failed spectacularly and then was transformed by the drawing love of the Savior to become a great preacher, church leader and shepherd of the Lord’s flock? That is the story of Peter, and in this warm devotional commentary William VanDoodewaard brings the letters Peter wrote to Christians in Asia Minor to life. Here you will be encouraged, blessed and challenged as God’s Word is lovingly explained. Look elsewhere for critical debate and doubts. Read on for divinely-inspired Scripture dealt with as it should be: evangelically faithful, Christ-centered truth.

The Welwyn Commentary Series, is knownin Reformed and Evangelical circles as a series which brings together phenomenal exegetical insight and wonderful practical application. This is a series that can be enjoyed by both the pastor as well asthe new christian and anyone in between. Each volume is short in length but it plows the depths of scripture and brings to the surface valuable nuggets of information, which can be used in personal devotions as well as sermon preparation. Furthermore this series is helmed by famed Old Testament scholar, John Currid, who currently serves as the Chancellors Professor of the Old Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary, which demonstrates the lengths the publisher, Evangelical Press, will go to secure this commentaries legacy of usefulness for generations to come.

One of the most recent volumes, of the Welwyn Commentary Series, is 1 & 2 Peter: Feed My Sheep by William Vandoodewaard. Upon my first reading of this volume, it was easy to see that this work adds to the stalwart legacy of this series. Vandoodewaardwrites on 1 & 2 Peter with thetenacity that he is known for in his teaching and scholarship. One of the most intriguing aspects of this commentary isits scope, for this volume covers both of Peter'sepistles. Most commentaries will only cover 1st Peter and then delegate 2nd Peterto bepaired with the epistle of Jude. This is usually do to their similar content as well as the writing style. With this unique pairing the entire scope of Peters contribution to the canon of scripture can be covered in one book, which not only emphasizes the unity of these two epistles but also highlights their shared authorship.

Turning to the content of this commentary, the focus is devotional insights combined with deep pastoralapplication for those looking to study these two Epistles. While reading through the introductory section, I was saddened to see, that their was not a great deal of ink written about matters of the Epistles composition or content. Yet this is keeping with the rest of the commentary series, choosing to focus on the content of scripture rather then on matters which are not of great interest to many Christians.

With regard to the content of the commentary proper,Vandoodewaard breaks to text down into variouspericopes (20 in 1st Peterand 5 in 2nd Peter) with eachpericopeserving as a chapter in the work. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of the amount of contentVandoodewaard was able to pack into a few pagesper chapter. As I was preparing for a series on 1st Peter, I was able to use the insights he wrote as well as the application he put forth to plow the depths of scripture to thosein my flock. I also used this commentary in my personal devotions, which was helpful to start the meditating on scripturein such a practical manner. I therefore without hesitation give my full recommendation to this commentary to all pastors and churchgoers who are looking to study the short but substantialepistles of 1st and 2nd Peter.

This book was provided to me free of charge from Evangelical Press in exchange for an unbiased, honest review.
