Zora and Nicky is a tale of electrifying attraction between two lost souls desperately seeking God's mercy and grace while surrounded by bigotry, misunderstanding and the selfish agendas of their fathers. Claudia Mair Burney writes with such brutal honesty and authenticity that you will feel uncomfortable in places, weep in others and be thankful for the truly Godly, yet imperfect, people in your life. Alternating between the first person voices of Nicky and Zora, and expressing both with exceptional accuracy and clarity, Claudia took me on a journey filled with heartache and hope, pain and humour, magnetic attraction and abrasive interactions. While confronting this is a beautiful story of love, forgiveness and the complexities of human relationships regardless of, and yet because of, faith, colour and environment.
Claudia Mair Burney is one of the top writers of contemporary fiction today. In this novel she introduces an interracial couple who meet fall in love. We walk with Zora and Nicky, two preachers children, as they grapple with issues of their own spiritual growth, ideas about race and family matters. With support from some unexpected sources the couple navigates some treacherous waters to determine if they have the courage to follow their hearts or submit to the traditional roles that they are expected to assume. This novel does an excellent job in pinpointing some difficult truths about race in America. As a Black female Christian who loves romance, this book provided an unexpected opportunity examine my own ideas about interracial matters. We will have to ask ourselves is God love or not and does his Word reign or our personnel ideas. Ms. Burney has an incredible ability to get to the heart of the matter in this novel. This will be a different type of reading experience but definitely satisfying. If you have never read her novels, you are missing out on hearing from one Americas most courageous and superb writers.
