Publisher's Description

This dictionary is designed to assist pastors and laypeople who use commentaries and other popular works on theology in understanding the technical and semi-technical theological terms that tend to creep into these books. The 1,800 definitions are far more helpful and easy to locate than what might be found in a general Webster’s type dictionary.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Jeff Miller

Submitted: August 15, 2002

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am 30 years old. I've been married to Jenny for seven years and as the saying goes, "I married up." We have two young daughters (3 years and newborn), one female dog, and (ugh!) a mini-van. I am teaching pastor (read "preacher") at Trinity Bible Church in Richardson, Texas--a church that knows how to love its pastors.

What was your motivation behind this project?  We were hoping to design a reference tool that would accomplish two things: 1) Give clear, concise definitions of terminology found in Bible study vernacular, and 2) create an all-in- one tool covering both biblical and theological terminology. The typical Bible dictionary is intimidating by its sheer size, dwarfed only by the theological dictionary on the shelf next to it.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  By creating the Zondervan Dictionary of Bible and Theology Words, we feel we are giving readers a key with which they can unlock doors and enter into a centuries-old dialogue. Readers can finally understand and contribute to the very specialized discussion surrounding biblical and theological discussions. Welcome to the party!

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  My heroes are the men and women who are committed to Christ and still devoted to wrestling intellectually with truth and doctrine. Thinkers like Bruce Metzger of Princeton and C.F.D. Moule of Cambridge in New Testament studies, and C.S. Lewis, Francis Schaeffer, Os Guinness, and Ravi Zacharias who skillfully communicate great thoughts to everyday people. These are in the rich tradition of Augustine, Calvin, Edwards, and Spurgeon, all of whom thought outside the walls of their Christian subcultures.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I read a recommended reading list the other day written by a nationally known pastor. I was sad to see the oldest book he recommended dated to 1982, written well within his adult lifetime. I encourage readers to enjoy a healthy, balanced diet of material rather than consuming a truncated diet of one author, one genre, or even one time period. Follow the advice of your mother: "Try it, you may like it!"
