Product Description

By locating Christian Zionism firmly within the evangelical tradition, Paul Wilkinson takes issue with those who have portrayed it as a "totally unbiblical menace" and as the "roadmap to Armageddon". Charting in detail its origins and historical development, he argues that Christian Zionism lays the biblical foundation for Israel's restoration and the return of Christ. No one has contributed more to this cause then its leading architect and patron, John Nelson Darby, an "uncompromising champion for Christ's glory and God's truth".

This groundbreaking book challenges decades of misrepresentation and scholarship, exploding the myth that Darby stole the doctrine of the pre-tribulation rapture from his contemporaries. By revealing the man and his message, Paul Wilkinson vindicates Darby and spotlights the immanent return of the Lord Jesus Christ as the centerpiece of his theology.

This is the most significant book in the dispensational debate to date and deals very conclusively with the opponents to the truth. Wilkinson fully demonstrates his case from both scripture and historical documents. This book will strengthen the reader's appreciation of the biblical teaching regarding the hopes of Jew, Gentile and the Church of God as taught by the Apostle Paul and recovered for the church at large when J N Darby (1800-1882) gave in his 11 lectures on this subject in 1840 in Geneva. His lectures took the evangelical world by storm and the perspectives JND outlined then have grown in acceptance - notwithstanding local and passing attacks. This is a groundbreaking book which challenges decades of misrepresentation and scholarship, exploding the myth that John Nelson Darby stole the doctrine of the pre-tribulation rapture from one or other of his contemporaries. By revealing the man and his message, Paul Wilkinson vindicates Darby and spotlights the imminent return of the Lord Jesus Christ as the centrepiece of his theology.

Christian Zionist eschatology is claimed by Christian anti-Zionists to be one of the sinister influences driving American foreign policy in the Middle East. In the midst of confusion, For Zion's Sake brings the vital clarity of a Christian Zionist explaining what they actually believe and do not believe. In chapter 1 Wilkinson gives a potted history of Zionism. He then defines Christian Zionism and catalogues its beliefs. In chapter 2 Wilkinson gives a valuable and well referenced introduction to the phenomenon of Christian Palestinianism, with its roots in iberation theology. The Christian Palestinianist onslaught against J.N.Darby and Dispensationalism is part of a smoke screen for anti-Jewish sentiment. It is worth buying this book for this chapter alone. In chapter 3 Wilkinson seeks to rescue the reputation of Darby from the widespread character assassination visited upon the memory of this founding father of the Brethren Movement. In chapter 4 Wilkinson examines Darby's eschatology and debunks the 'Darby myth'. Chapter 5 gives a fascinating historical overview of pre-millenialism in the Puritan era. Chapter 6 examines 19th century Restorationism and highlights the important distinction between Christian Zionist futurism and Christian Restorationist historicism. Chapter 7 takes a balanced look at the contributions of Christian Zionists toward the reestablishment of the State of Israel. Chapter 8 returns to Darby by evaluating his impact upon American church life. Whether you agree or disagree with the eschatology of Christian Zionism, this book, which is a result of Wilkinson's PhD studies, is as vital as it well written. It is meticulously researched from original sources and is a fully referenced scholarly resource. Whether one is a Christian Zionist or not, For Zion's Sake is the book to be consulted for a proper understanding of the movement.
