Tell us a little about yourself. We have been married since 1982, and have 5 children and 11 grandchildren--his, hers, and ours. We have been serving in the ministry of reconciling troubled marriages since 1991. We spend most of our time creating resources, equipping churches to do Marriage 911 ministries, and with family.
What was your motivation behind this project? We were separated, as Christian, for 2-years. After we reconciled in 1989, people kept asking us how we were able to get through our marriage crisis. In 1991 our pastor asked if we could help others in our church who were struggling. That led to our self-published workbook, "Reconciling God's Way" (now titled Marriage 11)and eventually to a full blown ministry and our current book, Yes, Your Marriage Can Be Saved.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? This book tells our story, as well as the story of other couples and individuals who have tried to save a marriage in crisis--especially with an unwilling spouse. Many couples were successful and some were not. The tools in this book work either way.Yes, Your Marriage CAN be saved!
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? We began interviewing many couples that we knew, but we also wanted to find couples that had amazing stories of reconciliation that we didn't know previously. The Lord led us to many couples, but one in particular, who we are now good friends with, which we ended up speaking with at national conferences!
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Many years ago, when we were writing our fist workbook to help couples in our church, I (Michelle) met author Pam Farrel and she encouraged me to finish the workbook, keep writing, and stay in the fight. If it weren't for Pam (who also told me I had to get email!)I really don't think Joe and I would be in ministry today.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Ministry isn't easy. Marriage isn't easy. Life is sometimes so difficult that you wonder how you can get through another day. But, when you serve the Lord with the gifts and talents He has given you, and when you let Him fill you with a peace and joy that surpasses all understanding, life can be amazingly exciting. Our favorite verse as a couple is: "...Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world" John 16:33 NLT.
