A Year with G.K. Chesterton will be a treasure, both for those who are coming to his wit and wisdom as a fresh discovery, and for those who have known and loved his work for years. . . . Chestertons talent for paradox, and his ability to embody profound truth in simple images, makes him as compelling now as he was a hundred years ago. . . . He was a prophet in his own time and a prophet for ours, speaking out against insidious evils and kindling us all again to a common love of the common good.
The Reverend Dr. Malcolm Guite, chaplain of Girton College, Cambridge University
This world of ours has some purpose; and if there is a purpose, there is a Person. I had always felt life first as a story: and if there is a story, there is a Storyteller.
G. K. Chesterton
A Year with G. K. Chesterton daily brings this truth to life. And we are heir to the winsome, arresting, utterly original outpouring of Chestertons reasons for hope. During his lifetime, a host of perspectives clamored for his attention, but he saw nothing as vital and alive as Christianity. Readers of this book will find their faith strengthened and enriched, even as they see the many reasons why George Bernard Shaw called Chesterton a colossal genius.
A true anthology, the best of Chestertons many works are presented in concise, memorable selections. From New Years Day to New Years Eve, each page contains a passage of Scripture and myriad moments for reflection, appreciation, and laughter.
Chesterton once a day? Well, thats a start. It is good to see that someone is finally recognizing the need for a daily minimum requirement of mirth and meditation from GKC.
Dale Ahlquist, President, American Chesterton Society
Kevin Belmonte writes in the preface to this excellent book that his editing of it has been a gift. As an author who has written regularly on Chesterton I can understand his sense of gratitude at having been able to spend so much time with a genius as genial as the great GKC. Thanks to Belmonte's labor of love we can all spend a few moments of every day of the year in Chesterton's inimitable company. All admirers of Chesterton and the Christian truth he explicates so sublimely will be grateful to Kevin Belmonte for this gem of a gift.
Joseph Pearce, author of Wisdom and Innocence: A Life of G. K. Chesterton
"Who could not be grateful for a year spent with GKC? The great subverter of everything taken for granted, he stretches and deepens us with his insights, shakes us with his startling paradoxes and delights us with his wit. Thank God there is no getting to the end of Chesterton."
Os Guinness, author of A Free People's Suicide

Mr. Belmonte has compiled many of Chesterton's best works and divided them into bit-sized pieces.
This is quite an accomplishment given Chesterton's dense style.
Every day includes a brief scripture reading, and many days include tidbits about what happened to the Chesterton family on that date.
The material is not new, but it is well-structured and enjoyable.

This is a good book, especially if you're a fan of Chesterton. Basically it is a year of "Chesterton" devotional readings... one for each day of the year. There's a Bible verse, a selection of Chesterton writings and a "On This Day"with some fun facts about Chesteron or his writings.
If you are an avid Chesteron fan you'll enjoy this book but if you are just getting into Chesterton, you might love this even more, as it gives you a taste of him in small chunks. Chesteron's wit, sense of humor and use of language is brilliant and tis is a great introduction to his work.

ChestertonDecember 1, 2012Heather KingGloucester, VAAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I'm a novice to G.K. Chesterton's writings, but after seeing quote after quote of his recently, I decided to give the book, A Year with G. K. Chesterton, a try. I'd actually enjoy more books like this for my favorite authors---a literary book of days to organize their writings into small but enjoyable selections.
In this book, each day's reading begins with a brief Scripture verse and then includes two short selections of writings by Chesterton. It concludes with a "day in the life-type" entry, journaling what significant event happened in Chesterton's life on that day in history.
The difficulty of reading this book as someone largely unfamiliar with Chesterton's life and writings is that the small snippets didn't really capture his larger ideas and the "day in the life" entries weren't enough to build a picture of who he was, what he thought, and what he accomplished. It was more hop, skip and jumping through a person's life leaving a garbled picture.
I wouldn't use this as a daily devotional, although it is formatted in a similar way. His writings would promote deep thinking about life, philosophy, theology, literature and more, but these are not always focused on deepening one's Spiritual walk.
That's not to say that I didn't enjoy the book. It's simply to put it into it's proper context. Is it a great biographical work or collection of his writings? No. Is it a devotional? Not really. But as an interesting, sometimes funny book that gives you a taste of Chesterton's work and invites further reading, it's a success. I would imagine that editing a work like this, choosing selections appropriately brief and yet engaging, was a difficult task and seems well done.
This book would probably be most enjoyed by a true lover of G.K. Chesteron's work, someone who knows about his life and has read some of his writings before. It would lend context to this collection and back-story to the selections. For a G.K. Chesterton novice, it's possible to appreciate the book and enjoy it well enough, but I think I'd personally prefer to start with a biography and then graduate to this collection.
I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. Alex KlagesCanadaAge: 35-44Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Wit and theology in great harmony!November 9, 2012Alex KlagesCanadaAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5There are a ton of daily devotionals out there, and the question can be reasonably asked by reasonable people why there needs to be another one.
In the case of this devotional book, "A Year With G.K. Chesterton," it is pretty evident within the first week or so why this needed to be printed. Outside of Heretics and Orthodoxy, and perhaps a few of his novels, much of Chesterton is unknown to even well-read people. The editor, Kevin Belmonte, has done a nice job of finding a Bible verse for each day and one or two Chesterton selections which tie in with the verse.
The selections range between his essays, novels, poetry, and even literary criticism. There is the occasional snippet written about Chesterton, as well. In and through all of them the wit and wisdom of Chesterton shines through— as relevant today as he was one hundred years ago.
The only drawback is that the main selection for each day is not given a reference, so it is very hard to figure out where each selection came from, if you want to read more. Having said that, the selections given are just the right size for a daily taste, in conjunction, perhaps, with other devotionals.
I would recommend this little book for anyone who likes a little humour and orthodoxly Christian thought.

S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, Chesterton's creativity matched theirs, although in his own unique style. This book is arranged with daily portions of scripture, thoughts, quotes and moments in Chesterton's life, to be digested over three hundred and sixty-five days.
An example? Whew! So many to choose from! Here's one: March 27 "_in my vision, the heavenly chariot flies thundering through the ages, the dull heresies sprawling and prostrate, the wild truth reeling but erect. "
A Year with G. K. Chesterton is a book to read slowly and savor, not because the syntax is from an older generation but because the thoughts startle one and a reader will ponder, "Could I think so wondrously and freshly? Can I be like Chesterton and see the world as new? How do I provide others with such wit and wisdom?"
However, Chesterton would probably respond to such a desire, "Be who God created you to be. Learn who you are and be honest about all facets of yourself."
So content yourself with enjoying the way God created G. K. Chesterton. Feed your soul with this well edited and designed book.
