Worship in the Early Church is a four-volume collection of excerpts from early Christian writings which describe the liturgical practices of the Eastern and Western Churches, from its Jewish beginnings through the end of the sixth century. This thoroughly documented collection includes doctrinal and historical treatises, scriptural commentaries, sermons, letters, synodal legislation, early church orders, monastic rules, baptismal as well as funeral epigrams. Each of the major selections is preceded by a short introduction which includes further background material such as dates and country of origin.

Volume Four includes writings from the Sixth Century Western Church with selections from Pope Hormisdas, Benedict of Nursia, Pope Vigilius, Cassiodorus, the Liber pontificalis, Pope Gregory I, Caesarius of Arles, Gregory of Tours, Columbanus, the recordings of the Synod of Rome (595) as well as the Rule of the Master. Writings from the East include selections from Theodore Lector, Dionysius the Pseudo-Areopagite, Eutichius of Constantinople, John Moschus, Evagrius Scholasticus, and a fragment from the Manchester Papyrus.
