My kids, ages 3, 6, and 12 have all enjoyed putting this puzzle together again and again (my 3 yo needs help). They've learned so much about the continents and oceans with this great visual aid! Well made , great quality, great price!
Love Being A MomHouston, TXAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great early World Map puzzleJuly 27, 2012Love Being A MomHouston, TXAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5
My toddler loves this puzzle, and plays it all the time! And, through talking about the puzzle as he puts it together, he now recognizes the different continents, and often spontaneously talks about them now! (Africa is one of his favorites--I think it's the neat shape.) ;)
Just fyi, this puzzle does not interlock. The puzzle pieces are distinctive shapes so that gives the clue to their placement (plus of course the pictures on the pieces), but they only stay in place because of the frame that surrounds the puzzle. A couple pieces are roughly shaped like the continent (South America, Africa, and Australia/New Zealand), but the rest of the pieces are cut up, though they obviously tried to have a logic to it (North America is divided roughly into Alaska/Canada/continental United States/Mexico-Central America pieces, for instance), and there are several regional animal pictures to discuss. :)
There is a B&W outline of the map under the puzzle that has all the country names printed (note: my version shows the final Yugoslavia before it was divided into Serbia, Kosovo, and Montenegro). The back of the puzzle frame lists all the countries and capitals, but we haven't used that part much yet (since my son is three). Again, it lists Yugoslavia instead of the three countries, but seems mostly up to date.
This puzzle is easy enough for a 2-3 year old to master quickly with a little help at the beginning, and has enough in the pictures plus the outline underneath and the information on the back to be of interest and educational use for several years more. I plan to purchase other world map puzzles and use them for their different strengths, to keep it interesting. :) I highly recommend this puzzle and really all the Melissa & Doug puzzles because of their high quality and detail at a reasonable price.
