Using a contextual approach, Wordly Wise 3000 students are taught to say unfamiliar words and identify any possible similarities to other words, use the word in context, break the word down into parts, and finally look it up. Three thousand carefully selected words taken from literature, textbooks, and SAT-prep books form the backbone of this vocabulary series. Each lesson begins with a Word List that includes pronunciations, parts of speech, and concise definitions, and uses each word in an interesting, contextual, sentence. Lessons teach new words through reading, writing, and a variety of activities designed to firmly associate words with the context in which they're used. Wordly Wise 3000, Book 5 is made up of 20 lessons with 15 words in each lesson.
In Book 5, vocabulary instruction is increasingly sophisticated, while continuing to prepare students for content area learning; lessons focus on building vocabulary while strengthening reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Comprehension of the vocabulary words is facilitated and reinforced through the five different exercises repeated in each lesson; reading first strategies as well as Greek and Latin roots are also included.
This third edition features the same word lists as the second edition, however, the passages and questions that follow the passages have been updated and assigned measures from The Lexile Framework for Reading. Wordly Wise 3000, 3rd Edition is not compatible with 2nd Edition teacher's guides and resources.
Wordly Wise 3000, Book 4 Words taught in Book 5 include: decline, hostile, obscure, loathe, exult, puny, stimulate, thwart, unwieldy, vertical, sparse, flail, and fume. Comprehension of the vocabulary words is facilitated and reinforced through the five different exercises repeated in each lesson. 232 two-tone pages, softcover. Grade 5.
Please Note: this book references evolution and an old-earth model of origins.

Ann3 Stars Out Of 5Unclear ExplanationsMarch 19, 2015AnnQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3My daughter used Wordly Wise 3000 series before. It was not that helpful because the explanations given in the books are not clear, making her confused often. It was a big challenge for her to memorize words this way. The drills are fairly dry and repetitive, too. We quit after three months.
As her teacher suggested, we subscribed to Beestar's online vocabulary program as home learning supplement. She receives the practice every week. Every weekend, she would spend some time reading its vocabulary articles. These informative articles are fun to read and make her more knowledgeable. Best of all, they provide very detailed new word explanations and examples based on usage. She learned a lot though reading.
Now she has been using it for a year. We are very happy with such an interactive online program.
Leslie S5 Stars Out Of 5My kids loved the seriesFebruary 6, 2015Leslie SQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I used the Worldly Wise series for each of my children, and they found it very helpful. At one point I considered dropping it for a year and my daughter said no, she liked the way words she was studying in Wordly Wise would come up in books she was reading. I like the fact that there is a reading selection that incorporates the vocabulary words and that the program is so easy to use.
