Using a contextual approach, Wordly Wise 3000 students are taught to say unfamiliar words and identify any possible similarities to other words, use the word in context, break the word down into parts, and finally look it up. Three thousand carefully selected words taken from literature, textbooks, and SAT-prep books form the backbone of this vocabulary series. Each lesson begins with a Word List that includes pronunciations, parts of speech, and concise definitions, and uses each word in an interesting, contextual, sentence. Lessons teach new words through reading, writing, and a variety of activities designed to firmly associate words with the context in which they're used. Wordly Wise 3000, Book 2 is made up of 15 lessons with 10 words in each lesson.
Starting in Book 2, vocabulary instruction becomes more sophisticated, while continuing to prepare students for content area learning; lessons focus on building vocabulary while strengthening reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Comprehension of the vocabulary words is facilitated and reinforced through the five different exercises repeated in each lesson; reading first strategies as well as Greek and Latin roots are also included.
This third edition features the same word lists as the second edition, however, the passages and questions that follow the passages have been updated and assigned measures from The Lexile Framework for Reading. Wordly Wise 3000, 3rd Edition is not compatible with 2nd Edition teacher's guides and resources.
Wordly Wise 3000, Book 2, 3rd Edition has 15 lessons with 150 words; words taught in book 2 include groom, boulder, soil, faucet, imitate, local, connect, settle, scholar and more. 144 two-tone pages, softcover. Grade 2.
Please Note: Some of the lessons present evolutionary views.

Homeschooling Mom4 Stars Out Of 5Good Vocabulary Development But...January 21, 2016Homeschooling MomQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 3I've been using Wordly Wise books for the past few years (1st grade through 8th grade with 3 different students) and I've found that the word selection is very good and most of the activities are appropriate for all my students, however, on the whole they tend to be geared toward more advanced students. The activities can be heavy on reading and writing, so if your student is not a strong reader or writer they will need more hands on help with certain activities. I found that with this 2nd grade book I had to do the activities with my student rather than allow him to do them independently. Even so, I believe, the vocab development portion, ie exposing the student to new more advanced words, is worth the tiny bit of extra effort. Also, beware that in this second grade book many of the stories meant for vocab reading comprehension are steeped in evolutionary dogma that you may or may not appreciate depending on where you stand on that issue. Personally, we had many discussions regarding world views. I would recommend this product with some minor reservations.
Damita Jo5 Stars Out Of 5Daughter likes this bookSeptember 16, 2015Damita JoQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I started out my daughter a grade below. I'm glad I did to, it's perfect for her. Not to advanced but challenging enough for her. Was not sure what to expect since we have never used Wordly Wise 3000. Let me say that my Sunshine is really liking this book, no whining at all. No complaints and she works smoothly on her own. We work on vocabulary twice a week 1 lesson. I don't think this will last the school year if it was worked on everyday. We will be using this again next year!!
Hope5 Stars Out Of 5Great learning funSeptember 11, 2015HopeQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have used Wordly Wise for years with my young 2-3 graders. They really enjoy the lessons and learn quite a few words without feeling overwhelmed or frustrated. They particularly like the word puzzles, which are designed to complete the answer to a riddle when completed correctly.
liv4thecrossAge: 35-44Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Good but advanced for early readers.April 16, 2015liv4thecrossAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 3I love the Wordly Wise series for my older children. I purchased this for my 2nd grader who was still reading first grade books. He is not able to do this on his own, and even with my help it is frustrating for him. This would be good curriculum for a strong reader.
We plan to use book two at the start of 3rd grade and then move into book 3. There are 15 lessons in this book broken up into about 5 segments, so if we do it daily we should be able to complete both grades in one year.
When we started using this series, I started a grade below for all of my children since they had never used it before. They have easily moved into their grade level by completing more than one book in a year.
