Product Description

This second edition work provides a biblical defense of the traditional complementarian position of women in the church. It offers detailed, careful analyses of Paul's views concerning women in the early church. How did he see their role? What was the Old Testament's perspective and the prevailing practice in the ancient synagogue? How did Jesus' teaching make a difference? This book offers a definitive statement of the complementarian interpretation of this crucial New Testament passage on the role of women in the church. Each chapter has been updated and reworked, and a new chapter of pastoral application has been added.

I am going to recommend Kostenberger's Women in the Church to many. This is thoughtful, scholarly, and very accessible to the layman or laywoman who is a good Bible student. I like the way the author not only presents his own position well, he understands and respectfully explains what is wrong with egalitarianism (feminism). One area of success for egalitarians is to promote teaching, books, and church studies for women to absorb which revise Bible heroines, heroes as well. Many women are naively reading and passing around to their friends books that avoid the issues Scripture raises in the lives of Bible heroines, without ever having to lie outright. If women were to spend more time in the Word, more time reading of their spiritual mothers in the Word, then it would be obvious to Christian women that holy women of the Bible have certain things in common, though they are diverse in their personalities and gifts: all were submissive to their husbands; supportive of masculine leadership in the home and church; none had positions of leadership over men; excelled in homemaking and childrearing; lived lives of humble service; and they felt their highest calling was motherhood. This I know because of Barbara B. Gardner's, Holy Women of the Past, a collection of portraits of twelve women in Scripture whose lives inspire women today to glorify God as true women. I recommend this book because it is a very practical women's ministry supplement for churches whose Pastor is preaching along the lines of Kostenberger. Give Women in the Church to your Pastor. Give Holy Women of the Past to your wives!
