Rebecca MatthewsAsheville, NCAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5This is an EXCELLENT book!December 11, 2013Rebecca MatthewsAsheville, NCAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I picked this book up at the local library, and skimmed the back page. It seemed to be relevant to some issues from my past, so I read it and-WOW! Now I understand some of the things from the past that helped form the part of my character that is misaligned. Now my husband is reading it, and is looking over his own past as well, realizing his own 'masks' and 'backstory', and how they have molded him. What a revelation for both of us! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has issues from the past that is keeping them from serving God at their fullest potential.
Fran Sandin5 Stars Out Of 5May 3, 2006Fran SandinAs women we may look like we have it all together at church on Sundays, but no one realizes that our lives are coming apart at the seams on Monday. We often compare, compete, and live in a land of unrealistic expectations causing us to miss God's best. In this book, Jan takes off her mask and shows us how we can, too. I felt challenged to become "the star" in God's heart, to be authentic, and to live the abundant life He has planned for me. This is a great book!
R. Rhea5 Stars Out Of 5April 5, 2006R. RheaGET REAL! Thats exactly what Jan Coleman encourages us to do in THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MASK. Tired of playing games and merely putting on a show? If youre really interested in getting real, this book shares in a very creative, insightful and helpful way just how you can trade the fake life for an authentic one. The author uses thought-provoking personal stories. In her transparency, she encourages readers to exchange the fake life for a life fulfilling and complete in the power of God. Study questions at the end of each chapter make this the perfect book for a glorious spiritual makeover. I loved it!

Tell us a little about yourself. I'm the queen of fun. I love games and planning parties. For so long, I kept this part of me in check, but now she's free to follow her passions and gifts. I love the mountains, old movies, classic books, my snooty cat, trout fishing with my husband Carl. We have four grown kids between us and six grandkids.
What was your motivation behind this project? This book was born out of my speaking ministry as I began to come out behind my masks and stop being what I thought the ideal speaker should be (with the tree point outline, appropriate scriptural lessons and the tailored pantsuit. I started showing up with props and hats and telling my stories with my own crazy humor. I can laugh at the painful, often shameful, stories now because "comedy is tragedy plus time and a godly perspective. I encourage women to view life from the lens of heaven, and reframe their experiences to see the profit in them, personally and spiritually. Women came up to me and say "you lived my life," or "we share similiar backstories." I came to realize that we all wear masks in different seasons of our lives. Some are necessary for a purpose, but so often we keep them, glue them on for protection. I began writing the book after talking to hundreds of women about the roles we play in life and why we compare ourselves to others so much. that they want to get real too, because it's the way to the abundant life Jesus promises us.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? The courage to unmask and get real. I spent the first half of my life wearing masks, covering up my disappointments and insecurities, wearing the pretend smile that everything is fine, and I can handle it. I didn't even know I was wearing them until a crisis came in my life. Then I discovered that God wanted me to have a spiritual makeover, a "whole life lift." He wanted to bring me back to the woman he created me to be. And that meant accepting and owning my backstory, my past and its hurts, because God intends to make our mess into our ministry. It's so freeing to finally show up as myself and stop trying to gain acceptance and approval from anybody (or anything, i.e. material security) but God.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: My early readers are telling me this is my best book, and they're probably right. It was the hardest book to write because I got more real, more vulnerable, shared more of my own struggles. Yet, it's a fun book to read, written with stage terms because my dream was always to be an actress. It was easy for me to wear masks and try and be somebody else. I think you'll like it. It's a book for every women of every age and situation. Write to me at: www.jancoleman.com
