This was my first read of Elizabeth Camden's and I must say I was very impressed with her writing and this book! This book is certainly a shelf keeper. One thing I loved about this book was the medical information, personally I LOVE this kind of stuff. It kept me interested and it also kept me turning the pages. Her historical detail was also very intriguing, not overwhelming but enough so that it brought the story to life. Another thing I really loved was the competition between Trevor and Kate, it was funny and I enjoyed it very much, possibly because I could see myself being that competitive.

Trevor, the hero of this book researches tuberculosis and it was absolutely fascinating to me! He was a wounded hero, of sorts on the inside anyway. He tries to act cold and impassive so he isn't hurt by things of present. There were so many things about Trevor that I could relate to. Like him building walls up around his heart. But, as his character shows us, no matter how hard we try, we can't outrun our feelings. He was really a gentle soul though behind it all. he cared for people so much that it was his defense to try and not get attached. He is extremely passionate about his calling, which is finding a cure for tuberculosis. His passion was so lovable. A passion for curing something that hurt people, being so determined to cure something so complex and would let nothing hold him back. Trevor isn't your normal hero, he isn't described as drop dead gorgeous but seeing him through Kate's eyes made him so handsome, I really loved his character.

Now for Kate, the heroine of this book. She is sassy, sarcastic at times, determined, bold and also loving. The audaciousness she displayed was laughable because she would always kind of stun Trevor with her response, the same for when she was sarcastic. It either stunned him or made him crack a smile. She is determined to make her new job work even though at first she can't stand the insufferable Trevor McDonough. She says what she thinks and asks what she want to know. Sometimes she can seem a bit nosy but I consider her a very curious person and who can blame her, for she really knew nothing about her new employer. I must say I would have been nagging a bit like her to see if I could find out what drove him. Who he really was inside. Kate cared a lot for people and that hurt her because it meant her facing her biggest fear. Her hurts and fears made her feel real and I loved her character.

Since the characters were both former friends, or should I say enemies? They used to compete in school so their banter started right away. It made their friendship interesting. Another thing I love is that they were friends before the romantic feelings started coming into play. Also there was some mystery in the book, it wasn't the main focus of the book but it was enough to keep me guessing and wondering who was behind the mystery.

I loved this book, the only thing I would like to comment about is toward the end it started dragging on just a little bit. Not so much that it was annoying I just thought it could have gone just a little bit faster. But, other than that I really enjoyed this book and I give it five stars!

I received this book from The Book Club Network Inc for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are mine.

    My Take:

Elizabeth Camden and has a way of making you feel as if you traveled back in time and are right there with the characters. Laughing with them, crying with them Etc. The way she writes the characters relationships is so entertaining especially the banter between Kate and Trevor. This is the second of Elizabeth Camdens books that I have read and I can't wait to read more. If you are looking for a great historical fiction book look no farther than Elisabeth Camdens With E very Breath. The plot will definitely grab your interest. Elizabeth Camden once again makes her female character a strong, smart woman. The element of faith shines in this book, and Camden reaches out with the message that "Your life is going to unfold exactly as God intends".

    Favorite Quotes:

"God never asked her to understand Him. He asked her to Trust Him."

"You only love when it's easy."

"Tomorrow might be riddled with fear and heartache, but right now in this perfect, God-given moment, he knew joy and was grateful for it."

Fabulous story of secrets, suspense, emotional turmoil and an uncertain love. Ms. Camden weaves a tale of two high school scholar rivals. One, Trevor McDonough, is a rich, arrogant, nerdy, Scotch immigrant. His opponent for the college scholarship is dirt-poor Kate Norton. When Trevor wins the academic scholarship, Kate believes Trevor robbed her of her only opportunity to go to college.

Fast forward a little over a decade. Trevor has changed his last name to Kendall, has become well-respected as a doctor, and seeks out the widowed Kate to help him in his fight against tuberculosis. He knows she is attracted to a challenge, but he doesn't expect her fear, his enemies, nor his secrets to get in the way.

The book was terrific because Ms. Camden took me, the reader, on a back and forth volley of emotions, like a very exciting volleyball point. Would these two put aside their differences and find love? One minute, I was sure the answer was yes, the next it was no,and so on, until I just couldn't predict "which team would win the point." The characters were wonderfully complex, and I loved the quick, sharp repartee' between the two main characters.

Best of all, though, was the spiritual lesson underneath. Forgiveness is a choice one must make to restore relationships. Also, we can pretend to be in control, or we can acknowledge God's control, and trust Him with the unknown.

I received this book from bookclub.org in exchange for an honest review.

Elizabeth Camden is a new author to me but you can bet Ill be searching through my kindle to see if I have any more of her books just waiting to be read. This book takes place in the last decade of the 19th century. The story is introduced around the childhood academic rivalry of Trevor McDonough and Kate Norton later to be Kate Livingston. The location the story is set in is Washington DC and includes mystery, humor, heroism, and romance. Its a page turner. I read the book in two evenings. I would have finished it in a day but work gets in the way. Im giving this book 5 stars because the story was so captivating and hard to put down. I completely enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. Honestly, I think you will be charmed by this book even if Christian Historical fiction is not your preferred genre. Its just that good.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, through The Book Club Network (bookfun.org) in exchange for my honest review.

First, I have to say I love this title! As you read the book, you realize it's perfect for the plot. It sums up the book in three simple, elegant words.

Kate Livingston is a young widow who helps her parents maintain their boardinghouse by taking a job with her former rival, Trevor McDonough. She and Trevor competed at almost everything in high school, until Trevor won the ultimate victory in securing a coveted scholarship that would have allowed Kate to go to college. Twelve years later, she's surprised when Trevor offers her a job as his assistant.

Dr. Trevor McDonough is passionate to find a cure for Tuberculosis. The work is grueling and heart-breaking, and he needs an assistant who is not afraid to fight alongside him. He's never forgotten Kate Livingston. But when he invites her to work with him, he knows he's taking a chance with his heart.

When Kate begins to unravel Trevor's intriguing past, will she lose her heart in the process? And when an enemy threatens their work with the Tuberculosis patients, will either of them withstand the assault?

This story was a wonderful, intriguing read. It's one of those stories that both entertains and teaches you at the same time. I had very little knowledge of Tuberculosis before I picked up this story, but now I feel as if I have a better understanding. Stories like this that make me feel in awe of the brave men and women who have come before us to fight for cures to make our lives better.

The bonus is that the romance is sweet and heartfelt. Both Kate and Trevor are well-developed characters with a lot of quirks! They're flawed, but loveable, and they have wounded pasts that make them relatable.

Elizabeth Camden always delivers a bit of suspense, and this story didn't disappoint. Wonderful historical novel.
