Despite her misgivings, Kate agrees to Trevor's risky proposal to join him in his work to find a cure for tuberculosis. As Kate begins to unlock the mysteries of Trevor's past, his hidden depths fascinate her. However, a shadowy enemy lies in wait and Trevor's closely guarded secrets are darker than she ever suspected.

As revelations from the past threaten to destroy their careers, their dreams, and even their lives, Trevor and Kate find themselves in a painfully impossible situation. With everything to lose, they must find the strength to trust that hope and love can prevail over all.

By far the best book by Elizabeth Camden so far, this book is a joy to read! It's an interesting journey into the difficult and terrible, seemingly unconquerable search for a cure for tuberculosis at the end of the 19th century. It was a major killer in big cities at that time and patients had at best a 10% chance of a cure if they were rich enough to hightail it to a sanatorium high up in the Alps.

Dr Trevor McDonough is a doctor on a mission to find a cure and is a pioneer in his field of research with brings with it both heartache and risk but he is determined not to stop until he finds a cure. When he opens a tuberculosis ward with his new ideas he invites Kate, his old rival from school days to join him and work with him to tally the stats on how well his treatment ideas are working on his patients.

I loved every bit of this book, from the work at the hospital, to Kate's family at the boardinghouse, to the changes in Trevor throughout the book, and the banter back and forth between him and Kate keeps things from getting too dark and gloomy even with the heavy topic of tuberculosis. I appreciate that although Trevor comes out of his shell somewhat, he doesn't become an entirely different person, but that Kate begins to be able to understand him better. Neither of them are perfect by the end of the book. The romance is sweet, but it is not the entire, overwhelming focus of the book. It happens very naturally. It's a clean, sweet historical romance that I had difficulty putting down and didn't want to end. It's the best book I've read this year so far.

I received this book from Bethany House for the purpose of an honest review. My opinion is my own. Thank you Bethany House!

With Every Breath will leave you breathless! That is no exaggeration. From the cover, this book looks like a mild romance-not that the cover isnt beautiful. It is. However, it belies the intrigue, mystery and passion that are between the pages of this book. Simply put, I loved it! Kate Livingston is a government worker in Washington D.C. and she is hoping that she can someday do work that fits her intelligence and talent. Never able to attend college, she helps out at her parents boarding house when not working her day job at a government census bureau. She accepts a job working for her old high school rival whom she had hoped to never see again. He has become a doctor and she cannot turn down the opportunity to do important work helping him find a cure for tuberculosis. Need I say more?! I will leave you to watch this story unfold. A word to the wise; set aside a few uninterrupted days to read this. Seriously! I finished it in three days and that was because I could only put it down to sleep-and barely that! Ms. Camden writes with a style that makes reading an easy enjoyable journey while at the same time having the ability to write complications to the plot that are a natural outcome of the characters personalities and quirks. The story fits the characters that she draws-she knows her story, fits her characters to that story and transports the reader to that time and place. This was my first time to read a novel by this author but it will not be my last. Well done, Ms. Camden! I give With Every Breath five stars!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, Bethany House, in exchange for my honest review. These words are my opinion.

I have loved Elizabeth Camdens other books, so the fact that I absolutely adored With Every Breath comes as no surprise. I had very high expectations for it and am thrilled to be able to say that it surpassed them all!

One thing that is always a given in Ms. Camdens book is the historical accuracy and detail. She seamlessly weaves it in a story, bringing the setting and time period to life, without overwhelming readers. Her writing was fantastic, as always, as were the descriptions. I often felt like I was actually there, with the characters. I was drawn in from the first page and didnt want to put it down!

Its a toss up who I loved more - Kate Livingston, or Trevor McDonough. Kate is a great protagonist and I was drawn to her immediately, wanting to find out who she was and what made her different. She is bold, determined, competitive, sarcastic, a bit nosy, but also kind and caring. She takes care of everyone, in little ways and cant help but care about everyone she meets. This is also a problem for her, since it means facing her biggest fear. She sounds almost perfect, but her fear made her human, real. I felt for her and was cheering her on every step of the way. I loved watching her grow and learn to trust God more fully.

Trevor McDonough is the hero of this novel, though he is a very atypical one. He is a doctor, determined to find a cure for tuberculosis, not exactly an exciting career. His description isnt overly dashing, either. But Ms. Camden has a talent for creating unlikely and unique characters, and making us fall in love with them anyway. And seeing him through Kates eyes quickly changed my opinion of him, anyway. Trevor is just as determined, competitive and sarcastic as Kate, which led to many interesting encounters between them. I loved getting to know him, too. Learning what made him the way he was, finding out what made him tick - I felt like Kate, nagging at him to find out his secrets.

I loved Kate and Trevors relationship. They knew each other from years ago and quickly fall into their familiar banter, picking at each other and nagging. Ms. Camden had me laughing out loud several times at the outrageous things they would say to each other. They are both unswervingly blunt, especially Trevor, which makes for an interesting friendship. I love this quote, which I think sums up their relationship really well. I always thought you and Trevor McDonough were destined to be either mortal enemies or the very best of friends. Youre too alike to be anything else. - Charlie Davis, page 36

They are both incredibly stubborn, as well, and face off often. But what makes them so special is that they started off as enemies, slowly became friends, then ended up as something more. I kind of wish Ms. Camden could have done a few chapters with them after marriage, so we could see them in that light, but I understand that probably wouldnt have worked very well - I can dream anyway.

There is also a mystery woven throughout the story. While it was rarely the main focus, it still fascinated me and I kept trying to guess whodunit - I was wrong, in case you were wondering. I did love having that aspect in it, a little mystery and suspense to give Kate and Trevor something else to argue about. I also really enjoyed that I wasnt even close to guessing who the villain was.

The spiritual theme was one that really touched my heart. Trevors faith isnt mentioned that much, except for when hes talking with Kate, but for Kate it was a big deal. She had to learn to trust God again. I really appreciated how carefully Ms. Camden dealt with this subject. She never made Kate seem foolish for struggling with trust, but rather gently guided her through Trevor and a few other people toward Him. And after losing her brothers and husband, I kind of think she had a right to fear losing anyone else. But her work with tuberculosis pretty much guaranteed that she would face more loss. I love this quote, taken from when she realizes that she either has to figure out how to confront her fear and trust God, or risk losing more than she was willing to.

God never asked her to understand Him. He asked her to trust Him. - Kate Livingston Thats pretty much the definition of faith - trusting, even when you dont understand.

I honestly cant think of a single thing I did not like about this book - a rarity for me. As Ive already said, I loved the characters, the dialogue, Ms. Camdens writing, the historical facet, and the spiritual theme. To sum it up, I loved everything about it! I even enjoyed the ending, which is always the worst part of a great book for me. I dont want it to end! But Ms. Camden did an excellent job of tying all the loose ends together and bringing it to a satisfying end.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys excellent historical romance!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

Kate Livingston and Trevor McDonough were fierce academic competitors in high school. Kate liked that because to compete with Trevor, she had to become better. There was never even a friendship between them in school and Kate is shocked when he contacts her to work for him. Trevor tries to find a cure for TB and wants Kate to work with him because he knows of her competitive intelligence. They share an office and little by little Kate peels away Trevors self-imposed, protective layer over his emotions. Learning of his secrets, Kate sees the real man. Will she stay in his employ or run away as fast as she can? Elizabeth Camden is an excellent storyteller. Her thorough characterizations paint Kate and Trevor for the reader. Her setting descriptions cause the reader to feel with all five senses. An interesting and compelling story.

A historical romance!! Oh, no, not another , I thought to myself, when I saw this book offered for review purposes! As this is not my favorite genre, I hesitated before saying that "yes" , I would review it! Upon the book's arrival in my mailbox, I reluctantly opened it and ..... what a surprise!!!! Low and behold, I was entranced from the first to the last chapter. Either it is exceptionally well written or I am being converted to thoroughly enjoying this genre. I do believe that it may be a bit of both!!

Kate Livingston, the main character, is living a respectable life in the nation's capital. However, her peaceful existence is suddenly disrupted by the one individual who had hoped never to encounter again, the insufferable Trevor McDonough! As a Harvard trained physician, he had never shown a bit of interest in Kate and that was fine with her, however business influenced him to seek her out.

Although she is hesitant, Kate agrees to Trevor's risky proposal, to join him in his work to find a cure for tuberculosis. Trevor's hidden past is slowly unlocked under Kate's scrutiny. However, there are closely guarded secrets that are far darker than she expected.

Her revelations from the past threaten to destroy both of their careers, their futures, even their lives. They must find the strength to trust that hope and love can prevail, when they have everything to lose.

This plot had me caught up from the first chapter . I could not relax until I had read the end of the book!! There were many intertwining subplots, that added twists and turns at every corner. At times, my heart pounding, I sat on the edge of my seat, as I awaited the next complication, and yes, sometimes frightening turn in the story.

The characters were realistic and so well described, that I immediately, was able to identify with Kate. That is what to me truly makes a good book. I felt her every worry, confusion, challenge and fear!! I must admit, at times I felt great anger at Trevor for putting her through such agony!!

Elizabeth Camden is a talented author to watch for future books!!

This book was definitely a five star read.

Book was supplied by Bethany House in exchange for a fair and honest review.
