Often people use one or two verses from the book of Proverbs to develop a whole system of discipline for their childrenparticularly verses encouraging corporal punishment. Author Paul Wegner points out that in reality, Proverbs, when taken as a whole, encourages its readers to use multiple levels of discipline for effectiveness. The levels fall into three main categories: learning guidelines, reiterating guidelines, and enforcing guidelines. These progressive levels of discipline have been used for generations to curb misbehavior; in fact, it’s the same type of discipline God uses with His people.
Dr. Paul Wegner is professor of Old Testament at Phoenix Seminary and visiting professor at Southwestern Bible College. He has degrees from Moody Bible Institute, Trinity International Seminary, and Kings College, University of London. Wise Parenting is Dr. Wegners fifth book. His wife and co-author, Catherine Wegner, was a stay-at-home mom for twenty years. She now works as a Speech Pathologist in several elementary schools. Co-author Kimberlee Herman is a clinical social worker who has dealt with a wide variety of behavioral issues with children.

IreneUnited States5 Stars Out Of 5Overall a great parenting bookFebruary 8, 2012IreneUnited StatesQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Wise Parenting: Guidelines from the Book of Proverbs, written by the trio of authors Paul Wegner, Catherine Wegner and Kimberlee Herman, is not just another parenting book. Using the book of Proverbs they present guidelines for disciplining our children. I know that not everyone is going to agree with everything that is written in this book. However, the authors do not write in a condescending manner and you will walk away from the book feeling like a friend has given you some parenting advice to consider.
Taking the entire book of Proverbs the authors show you can learn how to discipline in a loving and teachable manner. There are steps to take when a child disobeys. Making sure they understand what they have done wrong is essential. You have to remember that parenting is not just one day a year but every day until they leave your home and start their own.
The best way to teach your children is to model the desired behavior yourself. Our children are with us all the time and observe everything we do, from what we are eating to what language we use. Being sure to live the way we expect them to will help when we have to discipline their disobedience. The most important thing to remember is always express your unconditional love. All children need to know how much they are loved even if you are not pleased with their behavior.
I liked the honest and kind manner this book was written in. I thought the questions posed at the end of each section were well thought out and helpful. Overall it is a great parenting book.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.
Emmanuel4 Stars Out Of 5March 16, 2010EmmanuelA simple but practically engaging read. You can't fault the experience and backgrounds of a seasoned couple and parents, and that of a children's social worker as they co-author to share timeless nuggets from the book of Proverbs.Parenting; is a privilege and honourably so because not everyone is cut out to being a parent. Personal experience and social instances have shown that the mere fact "we've a way with kids" doesn't put us in the league of "good parents"; neither would our being firm or regimental with our children guarantee they'd become "principled adults" tomorrow. As a result; parents and indeed every adult involved with young people ought to be conscious of, and familiar with the four parenting styles based upon our individual personalities (this is worth checking out whether we're the 'I can't be bothered parent', or, the 'boot-camp commandant type', or both.), as we engage children and avoid the usual frustrations encountered as we try to connect with them. After all paraphrasing page 31,"our work has been cut out for us- since God who is the Father of all- loaned us (like care-takers) our children to shape and model them into masterpieces. We are expected to do our best with what we've been given. This, as we remember that sometimes it won't be easy as discipline sometimes needed. Hence we don't have to do the job alone-God is active in the process"!Throughout the book, one outstanding revelation that I believe every parent needs to understand with regards to our bundles of joy sums up whom a wise parent is:this is unconditional love. This alone should serve as a reason to pick up this book and read. A deep understanding of the 'unconditional love' that endears God to us regardless of our naughtiness, will put our relationships with our children back on track, or an opportunity to continue moulding someone like Jesus Christ, a perfect image of His Father indeed, word, and action!
