When Penny runs away to marry the man of her dreams, she has no idea that it will turn quickly into a nightmare. Seventeen and sheltered, she is drawn under Trent's spell, not realizing what he is truly like until it is too late. Years of abuse follow, dragging her down, as she sees no way out. An accident at work injures Trent, forcing Penny to find work and, unexpectedly, friends as well.

This is a very well written book covering a sensitive topic--domestic violence. Penny's youth and innocence is heartbreaking as she spirals into depression due to the hopelessness of her situation. Trent's accident helps snap her out of her depression as there is somewhat of a change in him for the better. The fulfillment of a long awaited dream--a child of her own--helps bring some joy to her life. Trent's returning eyesight, however, brings back his normal abusive self. Circumstances spiral to the point the Penny finally has to face the truth and find the backbone to save herself and her son. This is a poignant telling of an all-to-familiar story. I would definitely recommend this book.

Wings of Glass is a fictional story about a woman named Penny. She has an abusive husband and no friends or family nearby. Her life changes forever when her husband, Trent, is injured in an accident at work and left blind. She is then forced to work to feed her family.

This story is an easy read and has some very delightful characters. I don't agree with all of the subtle opinions or comments that the author makes, but nonetheless I enjoyed the book. I recommend it for a nice read on a rainy day. There are several instances of domestic abuse and violence towards women.

Penny is a woman who is used to being poor. Growing up, her parents never had much to offer her. But then she meets Trent, and he is more than a chance to get away from the poverty and abuse of her childhood. Feeling as worthless as her name con-notates, she sees him as an opportunity for love and true happiness. But something she never expected was the beatings of an angry husband who drunk away what little money they did manage to bring in.

When Trent has an accident at work that puts him out of commission, Penny meets some gals at the local food bank that offer her a job cleaning houses. Thrilled at the opportunity to prove her own merit and worth as a person, she is crushed when something comes up that will keep her from permanently enjoying her new freedom. Suddenly, everything changes. She's not just watching out for herself anymore, and Trent's abuse becomes dangerous not only to herself, but others as well. When will it become too much?bWill she ever truly be brave enough to stand on her own two feet?

Holmes takes a very sensitive subject, and portrays both sides of the abuse with grace and fairness. She realistically weaves a spell that is grounded in truth, and gives us a peek of what might go on in a marriage littered with abuse of many kinds. I loved the way the author was very frank, honest, and gracious in the way she portrayed Trent; while not making Penny to be a martyr, but a victim of circumstances. Recommended to anyone that either needs the courage to grow wings and fly, or for those who are already free.

I hold Gina Holmes fully responsible for putting me in touch with my feminine side this week. I cracked open the covers of "Wings of Glass" and was immediately swept up into the world of Penny Carson, finding myself deeply moved by her story such that I even shed tears! Holmes has expertly captured the heart-break of domestic violence, and yet has also shown the power of God in bringing others alongside to support and love hurting women to places of freedom. The book is very well written and the words flow smoothly, with the story leaving me craving more. The characters are wonderfully developed and you will leave the story feeling like you've made new friends. As I myself have worked with many victims of domestic violence over the years in my job as a social worker, I can tell you that Gina's book contains an authentic flavor that rings all too true. As such, readers may find themselves disturbed by some of the things they read about, at the choices Penny makes. Yet they will also learn the importance of loving women in these situations in a non-judgmental manner, as readers will learn that no situation is black and white. Although I enjoyed the character of Penny, probably my favorite character is Fatimah, who does everything with her unique passion. The scene where Fatimah invites Penny to dinner over the phone literally had me laughing out loud, and I loved how she wasn't afraid to stand up to injustice!

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll come away all the better for spending time with Penny and Fatimah. I highly recommend this novel and award it 5 out of 5 stars.

This is not my usual read. However, I had this book read in two days as I could not put it down. We meet a woman named Penny who did not have the best of relationships with her father and is swept way by a sweet talking handsome man. Trent is very controlling of her and is abusive. We are right there with Penny through it all. When her husband is hurt on the job and she has to take outside work she meets two very different great ladies. They both love her and help her through her pregnancy and her ordeal with Trent. Gina does a great job of showing very real characters, especially Penny and why she will not leave her husband. I look forward to reading more by Gina. I received this book from bookfun.org for my honest opinion.
