Product Description

Jeanne d'Albret, born in 1528, is the only daughter of the King and Queen of Navarre. Standing with her beloved Huguenots, Jeanne steps onto the battlefield of history during the tumultuous years of the Reformation (1517-1559). As deadly political events swirl around her tiny Kingdom of Navarre, Queen Jeanne is forced to choose: Will she hide the fleeing Huguenots under the very nose of Catherine de Medicis's henchmen or save her own life? The Chosen Daughters series highlights the lives of ordinary women who by God's grace accomplish extraordinary things. Recommended for ages 8 to 12.

Publisher's Description

When she converted to Protestantism, Jeanne found freedom of conscience. She hid Reformed ministers who were being persecuted, and she built schools and hospitals.

ChristianBookPreviews.com

It is the early 1500s, and one little Princess is coping with the hardship of learning to be royal: separation from parents, being controlled in all her actions, no friends, and a lot of loneliness. Her Queen Mama favors the Reformers, but her King Papa hates them. It is all hard for Jeanne to understand. And then she finds that, like all princesses, she is a pawn to be married off for political reasons. Jeanne’s tiny, alpine Kingdom of Navarre sits at a Basque crossroads, and bears great military and political importance. But Jeanne is special, not just in the eyes of her father and his friends and adversaries, but also in the eyes of the Lord. She stands at a religious crossroads, and with a bold hand for one so young, Jeanne throws herself totally on the Lord and dedicates her land to helping the persecuted Huguenots.
A bold, enchanting story, with moments of horror, humor, and joy, Wings Like a Dove fills many niches. Historically accurate fiction, this book stands out as real, heartening, and challenging. The contemporary feminist will learn much from this woman who stood monumentally firm at a time when women were considered to be only pawns. Christians will gain insight into their own history, and learn how to face the world’s depravity with the Holy Spirit’s courage. History buffs will find this little bit of European history an important bridge between the better-know eras.
Journalist, poet, author of historical fact and fiction, Christine Farenhorst delved deeply while researching Jeanne D’Albert, hence this fiction bears the stamp of reality. From Fahrenhorst’s love for this Queen flows an interesting story, full of adventure, well shaped characters, and poetic narrative. One of the volumes in the Chosen Daughters Series, Wings Like a Dove displays God as completely in control even when all seems to be splintering into despair. Written for youth, adults will also find this book absorbing. – Donna Eggett, Christian Book Previews.com

Wings like a Dove: The Courage of Queen Jeanne DAlbret, written by Christine Farenhorst, tells the story of Jeanne DAlbret, the daughter of the King and Queen of Navarre, France, who one day assumes the throne. The story is set in the time of the Reformation (1517-1559) which was a time of religious persecution for the Huguenots. The Huguenots were a group of French Protestants who criticized the Roman Catholic Church, specifically the many rites and rituals of the church. The Huguenots thought that Christians should live their lives with simple faith in God. They relied on God for their salvation, not on the rituals of the Church. While growing up, Jeanne became aware of the injustices done towards the Huguenots. They were killed and persecuted for their faith. She didnt like the way they were treated just because they stood up for what they believed. When she became Queen, she chose to publicly take a stand for the Huguenot faith.Like Margaret Wilson in Against the Tide: The Valor of Margaret Wilson, another book in this series, Jeanne DAlbret was strong enough to stand up for what was right and just, even though her parents, and even her husband, werent. There is a glossary of terms at the end of the book that defines some of the words used in the text that might not be familiar to the reader. What I Like: As Ive said before, I like historical fiction, especially stories that are written as well as this one. "Wings of a Dove" is one of the best books I have ever read. The author weaves adventure, and history of the reformers together, making an exciting story that keeps you turning the pages. Jeanna portrays Christian courage that will inspire you to stand up for your faith, just as she did hers! I am looking forward to reading more book in this series. I reccomend this book to girls of all ages!
