Product Description

This acclaimed story of World War II is rich in suspense, characterization, plot and spiritual truth. Every element of occupied Holland is united in a story of courage and hope: a hidden Jewish child, an "underdiver," a downed RAF pilot, an imaginative, daring underground hero, and the small things of family life which surprisingly carry on in the midst of oppression. The Verhagen family who live in the old windmill called the Winged Watchman are a memorable set of individuals whose lives powerfully demonstrate the resilience of those who suffer but do not lose faith. Recommended for ages 10 and up.

I, too, was disappointed with the book as the book is definitely written from a RC view point. I grew up in the Netherlands; Bible believing Protestants there are no different from American Protestants (I’ve met plenty of them). What annoyed me very much is the story about a supposed persecution of the Roman Catholics and their use of the windmills to convey messages. This is just not true. The Protestants were persecuted; many of them were burned, hanged, drowned, etc; this did not happen to the RC. Also as the windmills are in a very Protestant area; esp. the ones mentioned in the book, it is most unlikely that they all were owned by Roman Catholics. I bought the book for my grand-children; I feel it is not suitable for them.

An excellent story based on a real family who operated a windmill in occupied Holland during WWII. The family display courage, faith, and flexibility in a dangerous situation. I was quite surprised at the nasty review already turned in on this book; the family is not Roman Catholic, simply not American Protestant. I work at an international school for missionary children, and no parent ever had a complaint about the book.

I was disappointed in the strong Catholic presentation. The Lord's name in taken in vain in the introduction. In the first two chapters there is mention of ghosts, hail Mary, infant baptism and rosary. Not suitable for my nine year old son.
