Product Description

How are we to know "the will of God?" In this honest discussion, veteran pastor and theologian James C. Howell considers a number of issues relating to God's will, how it is known, how it is done, and how we respond when bad things happen and we feel God is absent or has turned away from us. In this sensitive presentation, Howell explores these questions and provides ways of recognizing the true things to which we can hold in the midst of hard times.

Howell proceeds simply and practically to consider personal understandings of God, God's will for our lives, and ways in which God's will is lived. He reflects on what to do and believe when bad things happen, "why they happen, and the quest for God in the midst of it all, recognizing that God's will is for good. Howell provides pastoral and theological help for the issues we face in life, showing us what we can do and how to "believe even more deeply in God, even as we grieve losses, resist evil, and muster hope."

Questions for discussion accompany each chapter.

Endorsements

“In this book some difficult, deep questions are explored, engaged, and sometimes even answered in James Howell’s clear, accessible, lively way. Howell makes serious theology accessible to the folks in the pews and, in the process, makes more faithful theologians of us all.” — William H. Willimon, United Methodist Bishop and author

“How does God work in the world? Does God know about and care about my life? These are some of the questions that shadow James Howell’s challenging and wise exploration of discernment, the character of God, and the nature of our relationship with God.” — Lauren F. Winner, Duke Divinity School, author of Girl Meets God

“This book comes from the heart of a wise and caring pastor who loves people enough to engage head-on their deepest and most challenging questions.” — Rev. Patricia Farris, Senior Minister, First United Methodist Church, Santa Monica, California

Publisher's Weekly

In this sometimes engaging, and often preachy, little book, Howell, pastor at Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, N.C., takes up where Leslie Weatherhead's classic The Will of God (1944) leaves off. Acknowledging that the will of God is both mysterious and capable of being understood, he ponders two distinct, but related, questions: What is God's will for me? and "Why do bad things happen?" As inscrutable as God's will seems to be, Howell advises that the Bible provides our training school and that regular worship is our rehearsal for understanding and doing God's will. Bad things often happen not because our souls are the battleground for the forces of good and evil or because it is God's plan for humans to suffer; bad things happen because we sin as we do and cause bad things to happen. In this world, Howell reminds us, we always fall short of doing God's will, no matter how hard we try to discern it and perform it, and evil and good grow up together. The best we can do in this life is to be open with love and faith to the will of God as we seek to be more like God. (Jan.) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.
