This review was written for Wild Thing - eBook.
Wild Thing is another good book by Dandi Mackall. In this book, Winnie is a young girl who loves horses and has longed for one of her own. She also deals with some of the same stuff that kids today deal with during adolescence. Winnie struggles with the pain of losing her mother and blames herself for her death. She also has moved many times in her life and also gets picked on by her peers because her family does not have a lot of money. Then, something happens to change things for the better for her when she has the chance to buy the horse she has always dreamed of owning, however, she has two hurdles to overcome: getting her dad to settle down and raising the money she needs to buy the horse. Will Winnie convince her father to not move again? How will Winnie raise enough money to buy a horse? Will God help Winnie overcome her guilt and heal her heart? This is a great book for girls because not only does the writer weave a good story, but she also addresses problems that many kids face and she does it in a way where God gets the glory.

I remember reading this book several years ago, probably shortly after it was published. I liked it when I read it then, and I also liked it when I reread it today, although I believe it was intended for slightly younger audiences. It is a pretty easy read with realistic and likable characters.

Winnie Willis is a twelve year old girl who absolutely loves horses. After being moved around a lot in the two years since her mother's tragic death, she happens upon a horse with a wild spirit. She immediately falls in love with the horse and has to find a way to buy her.

This was a fun book. There are a lot of fun characters in this book. One of the best parts was the way all of the characters really had a natural calling to the animals they favored. Lots of information about horses and their care is included. It was a lovely little story. It will be a fun read for anyone.

Wild Thing is such a fun read for my horse loving little girl. Though, I don't think she is the target age group for this book, she still loves the story and loves Wild Thing. I think it is really good and has a good moral to the story. I would recommend it for girls, probably between 8-12.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Dandi Daley Mackall

Tell us a little about yourself.  I grew up on horses, and my best childhood friends were Sugar (mixed-breed Pinto I rode bareback and solo at age 3) and Misty (black, probably Morgan, who grew up with me), and Towaco (the Appaloosa I showed through high school). My earliest "stories" from those years were all horse stories. At the University of Missouri, I majored in foreign languages, found Christ, and decided to be a missionary. For the past 20 years, I've been writing (over 300 books), riding, and living with my husband and 3 kids in rural Ohio. God is so good!

What was your motivation behind this project?  When Tyndale House asked me if I'd like to write a series for them--and maybe one about animals--I knew the invitation was backed by God! I've learned so much about God and relationships by studying horses and God's other creations; I felt this series would be an ideal way to pass along the awe. I've always encouraged new writers to write out what God's worked in. This series is my chance to do just that!

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  The teens in these novels are realistic, with problems most of us have had to struggle through. I'm praying God will use the themes and situations to encourage and draw readers closer to Him. I also hope they laugh out loud at my quirky cast--Catman Coolidge (cat expert), Eddy Barker (dog expert), Hawk (birds), Lizzy (knows all about lizards and bugs), and of course, Winnie the Horse Gentler.
