Publisher's Description

When the ground shakes, and a poor nation's economy is destroyed; when the waters rise, washing away a community's hopes and dreams; when a child suffers neglect and abuse; when violence tears apart nations; where is God? If God is all powerful, and if each one of us is a beloved child of God, then how can God allow tragedy and suffering to infest his creation? When we lift our prayers to God, and no answer seems to come; when we earnestly seek to know the will of God for our lives, yet can't seem to discern it; when God seems far away; where is God? If God counts the hairs on our head, and knows every sparrow that falls, why is finding and understanding God's will so difficult at times? In Why? Making Sense of God's Will best-selling author Adam Hamilton brings fresh insight to the age-old question of how to understand the will of God. Rejecting simplistic answers and unexamined assumptions, Hamilton addresses how we can comprehend God's plan for the world and ourselves. "When it comes to the weightiest problems for our faith, like suffering and unanswered prayers and God's will, philosophers don't get the job done for me. But thoughtful pastors do. For me, the one thoughtful pastor who offers wisdom for our deepest questions is Adam Hamilton. This book is a rare gift and the kind of book that needs to be close at hand for all Christians. This book proves theology has to be done by pastors."-Scot McKnight, author of A Community Called Atonement "As someone for whom the 'Christian answers' I grew up with failed to satisfy the troubling questions of my adulthood, I deeply appreciate Adam Hamilton's thoughtful book Why? I recommend this book to anyone who longs to leave behind simplistic answers and discover a God who invites them into a collaborative process of bringing redemption, love and hope to a world in desperate need."-Lynne Hybels, author of Nice Girls Don't Change the World "Unlike many Christian writers these days, Adam Hamilton does actually make sense of God's will. This is a profoundly satisfying treatment of common misconceptions about God. Everyone who asks 'Why?' when confronted with evil, innocent suffering, unanswered prayers, and failure to perceive God's will should read this book."-Roger Olson, author of Questions to All Your Answers

Author Bio

Adam Hamilton is senior pastor of The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, one of the fastest growing, most highly visible churches in the country. The Church Report named Hamilton’s congregation the most influential mainline church in America, and he preached at the National Prayer Service as part of the presidential inauguration festivities in 2013. Hamilton is the best-selling and award-winning author of The Journey, The Way, 24 Hours that Changed the World, Enough, When Christians Get it Wrong, and Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White, all published by Abingdon Press.

Publisher's Weekly

In this slim volume, a Methodist pastor of a large Kansas City church attempts to tackle the formidable issue of theodicy: if God is good, why do bad things happen? Hamilton (24 Hours that Changed the World) does so without resorting to big-name philosophers or Latin-sounding constructions. He has a comforting story-telling approach to writing that will be appreciated by readers wanting to soothe their sores more than grapple with the complexities of this age-old question. Hamilton proposes that God has given human beings responsibility and free will to manage their lives and oversee the created order. He sidesteps the issue of why God is necessary if people are essentially left to their own devices. Instead, he offers faith in a larger Christian scheme, a divine narrative that the gifted theologian and writer Frederick Buechner summed up by saying that "the worst thing is never the last thing," or, in more traditional language, life will overcome death and good will triumph over evil. I participated in a summer Bible study group using this book along with Scripture. I enjoyed it so much that I recommended it to my Sunday school class and now we are using it for our class study. I disagreed with the author on a couple of issues, but overall found the book to be sound scripturally. The author really gives you food for thought and discussion.

After reading and studying this book with my sunday school class I bought copies for all they guys in my bible study group. Great, thought provoking look at some tough questions we all deal with at one time or another.

A little too expensive for a small book though.

A friend of mine handed me this book a short time back knowing how I admire Adam Hamilton's sermons and writings. He is the senior pastor of The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas.

WHY? is a small book, only about a third of an inch thick, about four inches wide by seven high, but it's packed with wisdom from cover to cover.

The book is dedicated to two friends Pastor Hamilton held in high regard, Gary and Danny Patterson. The two suffered what he classified as "an untimely death," and the book is Pastor Hamilton's attempt to make sense of their senseless deaths.

He talks about why innocents suffer, why prayers seem to go unanswered, why God's will seems obscure, and why God's love prevails. If these questions have plagued you, too, you might want to pick up a copy.

I am using this book for the leaders of the Stephens Ministry in my church. The questions help us to help others. People in pain are full of questions and often think they are the only ones with questions about why and where is God in my pain. This book is an excellent resource for all.
