When Murray Pura's The Wings of Morning was released, one of his rave reviews came from Romantic Times magazine:

Pura has created one of the finest stories of Amish fiction I have ever read .The reader will be applauding the exceptional writing and the cast of characters demands an encore performance.

Here is that encore performance.

In the third book in his Snapshots of History series, Murray brings back Jude and Lyyndaya Whetstone, the beloved lead characters in The Wings of Morning.

The year is 1941 and Jude and Lyyndy, with their adult daughter, Rebecca, are summoned to far-off, exotic Honolulu where Rebecca, a flyer like her father, meets a likeable young pilot. The two enjoy a friendship that seems to be turning into something more serious ..until Sunday, December 7, 1941 dawns on the Hawaiian Islands.

Readers who love the simplicity of the Amish, a good romance, and a dramatic historical setting are in for a treat with Whispers of a New Dawn.

I always enjoy historical fiction about Pearl Harbor and this book was interesting to read. I liked it at first and then the main characters began to get way too "sticky sweet" and sappy for my preferences. It was no longer believable at that point, and ruined the romance part of this story for me.

There were many descriptions of affection that didn't seem to mesh with the time period, and Becky seemed pretty brazen. In my opinion, the author ruined this story.

Becky's Christian (Amish) parents never object to the fact that she is running around with a guy, late into the night, falling asleep in his arms on the beach, etc. (this IS supposed to be the 1940's, so that didn't make sense to me)

Her love interest, Christian Raven, who is supposed to be a believer as well, is CONSTANTLY making comments about her appearance and buys her a two piece bathing suit so he can enjoy her with his eyes.

In chapter 23, Becky is suddenly wearing her father's flying scarf around her neck out of the clear blue. A few pages over, when she is getting dressed for a dance, the author notes that "a flesh colored cream covered the blemishes on her neck". I was very disappointed and found this completely inappropriate, at what was being suggested.

Other Christian readers may disagree however, and find this tame by today's standards, but I would not recommend this book based on the lines the author crossed with these characters.

Murray Pura in his new book, "Whispers of a New Dawn" Book Three in the Snapshots in History series published by Harvest House Publishers takes us into the life of Becky Whetstone

From the Back Cover: Whenever the sun sets in one part of the your world, it always rises again in another."

The year is 1941. Pilots Jude and Lyyndy Whetstone arrive with their adult daughter, Becky, back in their Amish community in Lancaster County. It's time to consider giving up flying forever and finally settle down among their relatives. It seems God is leading that way, especially when Becky finds romance with young Moses Yoder and decides to abandon the skies for the life of an Amish wife.

A summons to exotic Honolulu changes everything. Jude has been asked to train fighter pilots for the new Army Air Forces. If they go, they will not be allowed to return. But the call to serve the country they love prevails, so the family departs amidst tears at what they're leaving behind and fears at what awaits them.

Once settled on the beautiful island of Oahu, Becky is also hired on as a flight instructor and takes an immediate dislike to her newest student-the brash Christian Raven. Their turbulent road to love comes to a crashing halt with the horrific bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. As Christian joins in the fight that will become World War II, Becky wonders of God would be so cruel as to snatch love from her life a second time.

I love history and "Whispers of a New Dawn" is loaded with it without it becoming a school history textbook. Mr. Pura looks at the beginning of World War II from the American point of view by leading into the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Both Raven and Becky have their issues to deal with before they can really commit to each other and it is fun to watch them deal with them together. Though, ultimately, it is up to God to really heal them both, especially Becky, as she has to deal with her issue toward Him. "Whispers of a New Dawn" is an adventure story filled with detailed battle scenes that will make you feel that you are there witnessing the event. It is also a thriller as both Raven and Becky's lives are in danger during the course of the war. "Whispers of a New Dawn" is also a romance that is all about relationships and that is what makes this book a winner. I enjoyed this book a lot and am looking forward to more by Mr. Pura.

This book can't make up its mind what it wants to be. One minute it seems pro-Amish, the next anti-Amish. It goes back and forth through the whole book like that with little bit of everything thrown in. I have seen the trend this book seems to take more and more in Christian fiction lately--we all serve the same God (or Jesus), just in different ways. That may sound good, but it's totally against what the Bible teaches. It also leads to confusion (of which there's a LOT of in this book when it comes to anything to do with God), and God is not the author of confusion.

I had a hard time liking Becky, the heroine. She's very impulsive, immature and highly selfish a good portion of the time. Unfortunately, I can't really give examples or I'll spoil the book.

Overall, even though this book is listed as "Christian Fiction" and God and the bible are mentioned fairly often, it doesn't feel very christian. Couples are making out all the time, staying out til 4 in the morning at times (this is in the 30's and very early 40's and yet the parents--supposedly christian parents--are totally fine with it?!?), worldly music, dancing boogie woogie, having the boyfriend carry you into the water to get wet and cool so you have an "excuse" for him to hold and cuddle you at night alone on the beach til all hours, rotten attitude to anyone who doesn't agree with you.....the list goes on and on. I was highly disappointed in this book and would not be able to recommend it to anyone.

I was given a free digital copy to read and review by Harvest House Publishers through NetGalley.com. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

In Whispers of a New Dawn, author Murray Pura pens a powerful saga that begins in the farm laden fields of a peaceful Amish community in Lancaster County, to the white sands and turquoise waters of the exotic Hawaiian Islands.

Pilots Jude and Lyyndy Whetstone have arrived back in their Amish community with their daughter, Becky, wondering if it is finally time to settle down with their families once again. Becky received her flying license when she was sixteen years old and has flown in the Caribbean and Africa, a far cry from the little Amish farming community she begrudgingly agrees to visit.

Once settled in however, Becky meets Moses and quickly falls in love with the gentle spirited Amish man, whose words flow like poetry and beautiful dark green eyes that see deep into her soul. Just as she decides to be baptized into the Amish faith and become his wife, a terrible tragedy occurs -- and when the Whetstones are summoned to the beautiful island of Oahu to train fighter pilots for the Army, Becky goes with them.

Becky's newest student, Raven, is brash and they butt heads instantly, but both are driven together by a need for inward healing. On the turbulent road to the bombing of Pearl Harbor...will love come twice in a lifetime for Becky Whetstone? Or will it be snatched away by the war's consuming fire?

Murray Pura has once again written a novel that is guaranteed to take your breath away. Only the very best writers have the power to evoke such a gamut of raw emotions in a reader during those first few pages and I was immediately drawn in--hook, line, and sinker. In the poetic prose Mr. Pura is so well known for, the romance and storyline will sweep you off your feet and cause your heart to soar amongst the clouds...literally. A powerful story of healing and God's love with a dramatic, heart pounding conclusion, this is an absolute must read!
