When Charlotte and Joel are coerced into planning a fund-raising gala for the hospital, will this combustible pair explode?
Fan favorite Lorna Seilstad is back with a breezy, lighthearted love triangle that will keep readers guessing. Attention to historic detail adorns the timeless story of a young woman looking for true love and making her way in a rapidly changing world.
Debbie WilderSalinas, CAAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5This is a fantastic inspirational romance set in 1910.May 5, 2015Debbie WilderSalinas, CAAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I really don't know very much about the culture and what society was like during this time period. I am just trusting that the author did her research and has written it accurately. That being said I want to say that I loved reading the details that she worked into the story. I loved the look at the amusement park and the yacht club regatta that she included. The details about the type of outings couples would go on when courting were wonderful.
I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know more about the Gregory sisters. I especially liked getting the update on Hannah and Lincoln, who were the main characters from the first book in this series. The deeper look at Charlotte only made me connect more with this wonderful character. She is so well developed and I was fascinated to see how events in her life from book 1 affected her personal story in this book. Lorna did a marvelous job of portraying that effect on the character's personality.
Lewis and Joel are both interesting characters and well developed. Their personalities are very different from each other. They also relate to Charlotte very differently. I loved reading the interaction between each of these pairs. Both of these men also have past events that have helped to shape who they are now which are very clearly presented. They are very different and both are just as enjoyable to read and just as easy to understand their affect on them.
Tessa is the youngest of the Gregory sisters. I found her progress in growing up and defining her individuality very entertaining. I am looking forward to reading her story in the third book in this series.
LarikSan Antonio, TXAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Awesome!!!January 3, 2015LarikSan Antonio, TXAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Lorna brought true chemistry in this book, I'm surprised the pages didn't burn!!! Adorable and a complete antidote for boring this story isn't just a triangle of love... this is a transition of letting go of the old and redefining the new- in the history ( the transition to gas stoves) and in relationship. Charlotte and Joel have both been hurt in the past and have made some serious promises to themselves....its going to take a miracle and a strong chemistry to readjust their thinking and poor smitten Lewis and a very jealous nurse aren't helping matters one bit..
absolutely loved this story!!!! Cant wait for the third one....if this very calm (from the first book's introduction) lady was such a character, can you imagine what their little sister is going to be??? absolute disaster!!!! i already feel sorry for the guy from that book...
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from Revell, through Netgalley, in exchange for my honest opinion
MaryAnnORAge: 55-65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Historical filled with crises and cookingOctober 9, 2014MaryAnnORAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5The Gregory sisters story continues in this second book of the series. Charlotte has graduated from Fannie Farmers cooking school and hopes to secure a job in a city restaurant. She also wants to help reform hospital nutrition for patients. The latter brings conflict with handsome Dr. Joel Brooks. Charlotte eventually secures a job traveling and giving cooking demonstrations on the new gas range, accompanied by singer Lewis Mathis, who is attracted to the vibrant young woman. Her younger sister, Tessa, is enamored by the theater and tries not only to land a part but to solve a crime there.
Aunt Sam, with whom they live, suffers a stroke and needs round-the-clock nursing care. The nurse Dr. Brooks sends becomes jealous of his attention to Charlotte. Could the doctor and the cook ever manage a relationship as refined as the food Charlotte serves, or will their personalities continue to clash? This all plays out amid various crises and adventure, including a tornado and an explosion. Something is definitely stirring in this novel.
Rose McCauleyKYAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Another delightful book by Lorna Seilstad--While Love Stirs!August 10, 2014Rose McCauleyKYAge: 55-65Gender: femaleThis is the second book in the Gregory Sisters historical series. The main character is Charlotte, the middle sister whom we met in the first book, When Love Calls.
Sparks fly when Charlotte Gregory meets Doctor Joel Brooks and they disagree over nutritious diets for pregnant and nursing women. Joel never learned much about it at medical school, and Charlotte just graduated from Fannie Farmer's School of Cookery, so knows a lot about cooking nutritious meals.
In fact, she finds a job doing cooking demonstrations for the gas company to promote gas stoves. Anytime they are together, Charlotte and Joel clash, but an attraction is also growing. Can their mutual attraction outweigh their strong personalities? Read the book to find out!
Although this is the second book in the series, you can read this one without reading the first, but I would suggest reading about Charlotte's older sister in When Love Calls, then reading this one, because I love to read series books in order!
This book was a gift from the publisher, but this review is my own opinion.
IolaNew ZealandAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Solid Christian Historical RomanceJuly 17, 2014IolaNew ZealandAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4This is the second Lorna Seilstad book I've read—the other was her début novel, Making Waves, and I wasn't overly impressed by it. The writing wasn't bad, but I didn't like the heroine at all, and I couldn't stomach the thought of reading further books in the series if she was featured. However, While Love Stirs is part of a new series, so I hoped it would be better.
It was. While Love Stirs is the story of Charlotte Gregory, recent graduate of Fannie Farmer's School of Cookery. She is seeking employment as a chef (chef = stirs, get it?), but none of the restaurants in St Paul's are interested in hiring a female chef. Charlotte is an intelligent if opinionated woman (which puts her streets ahead of the heroine of Making Waves), with feminist tendencies and she doesn't want to be controlled by any man.
Joel Brooks is a doctor at the local hospital (this was a little confusing. At first he seemed to be on the maternity ward, then he was looking after a woman with suspected cancer, then a stroke patient). Anyway, he has a run-in with Charlotte about the appropriate diet for a new mother (Charlotte's sister). I didn't like Joel at first because of his pathological need to have complete control over his environment, and I didn't see him getting past that (Freud would have a field day with Joel's OCD). However, but he grew on me as he grew on Charlotte.
This is actually the second book in The Gregory Sisters series. The first was the story of Charlotte's older sister, attorney Hannah, although you don't need to read the first in order to understand or enjoy this (I hadn't). The writing and research was well done (with a couple of unimportant glitches), and I was impressed by the medical knowledge.
The minor characters were well written, and while I found characters like Kathleen and Nurse Pierce rather annoying, that was the point. The one character I didn't like was Tessa, Charlotte's younger sister. Tessa was too flighty (partly because she was young, but I didn't realise how young she was because I haven't read the first book).
I enjoyed While Love Stirs, but it's still not a book I'd bother to reread. I also thought the Christian aspects were too understated (perhaps a reaction to the reviews of Making Waves which suggested it was too preachy). All in all, it's a solid historical Christian romance, but with nothing to make it stand out above all the others in the genre.
