Publisher's Description

If there is a loving God, then why is it that … ? You’ve heard that question, perhaps asked it yourself. No matter how you complete it, at its root lies the issue of pain. Does God order our suffering? Does he decree an abusive childhood, orchestrate a jet crash, steer a tornado through a community? Or did he simply wind up the world’s mainspring and now is watching from a distance? In this Gold Medallion Award–winning book, Philip Yancey reveals a God who is neither capricious nor unconcerned. Using examples from the Bible and from his own experiences, Yancey looks at pain—physical, emotional, and spiritual—and helps us understand why we suffer. Where Is God When It Hurts? will speak to those for whom life sometimes just doesn’t make sense. And it will help equip anyone who wants to reach out to someone in pain but just doesn’t know what to say.

This book couldn't have been found at a better time in my daughter's and my life, as she was going through a physical crisis. She had already been through so much; we asked God why this? This book helped both of us emotionally, by strengthening our faith and helping us understand other's responses to her. It left us with more compassion for those who suffer. To God be the glory, before we even finished the book, He answered our prayers and directed her path to healing.

Awesome book!! I loved it so much that I recommended it to my small church group and we are reading it together. It really opened my eyes to God's role in the pain I have suffered in my life, and has brought me much comfort.

Still reading - but it is helping me deal with my pain by reminding me that pain is apart of growth.

Pastor is using this for discussion in Adult S.S. Class - really excellent...I read it after reading My Heart's Desire - and it underlined what I had recently learned about refocusing during times of crisis...Excellent

"Where is God When It Hurts" gave me the chance to understand that God is beside us when it hurts but He does not explain us why we are hurting. After reading this book and concluding pain has no real logical and humanly understandable rationale I personally decided it is better to concentrate on getting better than on blaming God. Pastor Yancey makes the point that God is good and that He has a purpose for everything, but it is virtually pointless to try to understand why he poses pain in our lives. This author illustrates points where healing has not taken place and where healing sometimes never took place in this life. He suggests though that one day all the pain we encounter will be nothing compared to the joy we will experience in heaven as Paul says. So he encourages to look forward into the future because whether it is healing or heaven it is always best for those who have faith. So have faith.
