Makes a potentially tough subject comfortable
February 8, 2013
This entire series of books makes opening the *conversation* of human reproduction & the sanctity of sex much easier and more comfortable for parents. This topic is the responsibility of parents to bring up and discuss with their children - not the schools', not the doctor's, and certainly not the culture's or the media's. These books are accurately, but tastefully written, Biblically and culturally relevant, and age appropriate. All that said, I strongly recommend reading through the books before going through them with your children to ensure you're not caught off guard. You may think a certain aspect should be brought up sooner or later that the books present. Again, you're the parent. You lead the way. These books will help you.
This book introduced the subject of sex from a Christian perspective, without graphic details that would be inappropriate for a 7-yr-old. I'm extremely grateful since we never see our worldview in the media in this area, relating sex to marriage and babies. However my almost 9-yr-old was left with questions that had me about to pull out the next book for 10-12 yrs. (She tends to be quite literal and scientific, "How exactly ...") But I told her we would get more detailed when she is closer to 10 and to come to me whenever questions arise before then. Overall we found it wasn't enough for a 9-yr-old but would have been perfect before 3rd grade. I may need the next level sooner than age 10.
This is a great book for starting "the talk" with a 7 year old daughter. It doesn't just talk about the details, but also has a good storyline. After reading this to our daughter we went on to let her watch "Life's Greatest Miracle" on pbs.org. It seemed to be a good combination.
