Author/Artist Review

Author: Dan L. Martineau

Tell us a little about yourself.  I have been a pastor now for over 32 years. I felt the call to preach when I was 11 years old. My first church was in Coalwood, W.Va. where I went to work at Olga Coal Company. I will have been married for 37 years this May, 2006. I have three sons, all married, and seven grandchildren.

What was your motivation behind this project?  First, I wanted to brush up on my creative writing skills. Most of everything I have ever written was theological or educational. Second, many people who know nothing about coal mining, wanted to know what it's all about. Third, I wanted people to know about the hardship of life in the Appalachians; what it's like to pastor a small church in a place with a culture much different than your own; and of the hard and dangerous work of mining.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope to encourage anyone who may have a difficult job, or who may find their self in any hard situation, to trust in God. Also, I hope to tell as many as I can about the hardships of coal mining in the U.S.A.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I have many favorite authors: G.Campbell Morgan; C.H. Spurgeon; Eugene Peterson; J.Sidlow Baxter; Arthur Custance; Chuck Colson; Leonard Sweet; Jack Hayford; Peter Wagner; Derek Prince; Chuck Pierce; etc.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  This book isn't a dry documentary or informational book. It is written in an easy-to-read story form, which appeals to everyone. Women who have read the book have enjoyed it; even children as young as 9 years old have read it. Some teachers have read it to their class to give them some idea of coal mining.
