Publisher's Description

“I didn’t have a choice. I didn’t.” That’s what Allie Whitman tells herself every night as she lies awake. Sometimes she even believes it. But mostly she knows deep down that her inability to make a hard choice has put millions of lives at risk, including her own. Now the only one who can help her is her lawyer, Connor Norman. Unfortunately, Allie’s actions have destroyed Connor’s trust in her—and may destroy much, much more.

When the Devil Whistles, a thriller by Rick Acker, tells the story of a “whistleblower” and her lawyer as they get themselves into more trouble than they know how to handle. The story focuses heavily on the legal issues surrounding the protagonist’s career as a whistleblower (someone who gives insider information to the IRS or other government agencies when money or materials are mishandled or used illegally), and sometimes gets a bit bogged down in detail. Though it is clear the author is knowledgeable in his field, the story sometimes pays the price in the overzealous descriptions and explanations.

There is also a clear lack of spiritual focus in the story. One of the protagonists occasionally will mention God and send up a short prayer for guidance, but this seems out of character for him or her and almost appears to have been added to fill space. Nevertheless, the characters themselves go through clear and beneficial changes, gaining, at the very least, a more Christian morality.

I would recommend this book mostly for those who already have a basic understanding of legal practices and have the time for a lengthy and sometimes slow story. – Jordan A. Rockey, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Great suspense. The transitions back and forth from character to character or scene to scene is handled well and I never got confused wondering who the heck I was reading about.

Review : When the Devil Whistles - Rick Acker - October 2010

Every now and again , a book will come out with a really amazing book cover as even though I know we are not supposed to - I tend to be a judge by the cover type girl and I really liked the cover of this book as it gave off a sense of mysteriousness and intensity.

We start off with this book at a company called Deep Blue with one of their ICT people hacking into their computer systems and then flicks to a lawsuit case against Hamilton Contractors whom had been overcharging customers and defrauding the system.

Then after the prologue and first chapter ends we get into the real story of Temp worker and Rock-star Gf Allie Whitman who works as a double-agent of sorts - she is what is called a whistleblower , her job is to get into a business , have access to their financial records and then gather evidence to sue them under the company of "Devil to Pay Inc." . At Devil to Pay Inc. she has lawyer Connor on her side and he presents the cases to the judge and wham bamn , they get paid and Connor has a success rate and Allie gets to live the high life whilst temping - it's a win-win situation.

It was until Allie took a job working under two companies - one convinced the other is frauding their systems and wants to see them go under and will do anything -absolutely anything to ensure that Allie will get them to court including bringing up secrets of Allie and Connor's past.

Soon they both find themselves in hot water fighting battles both in and out of the courtroom to go the lengths to protect their secrets from the outside world finding out.

An underlying theme of ethics in business and the consequence from wrong personal choices move the story forward enriching the perceptions of Acker's characters and the driving force behind Conner's motives and actions as they impact the final climatic explosive outcome of "When the Devil Whistles."

When the Devil Whistles is a novel filled with adventure , legal thrills and intensity and of course rock n roll.

"When the Devil Whistles" is a legal thriller that also works in some military suspense. It's fast-paced and keeps the reader guessing as to how everything will work out. The suspense was created by possible physical danger to the various characters as well as curiosity about the various decisions they will make and how it will all play out. The characters were complex and dealt with realistic problems (though--specifically--not ones most people face). The vivid details of the job and setting brought the story alive in my imagination.

For those who care, Allie sometimes drank to excess and lived with her boyfriend. (It's implied they have sex.) She knew he used meth and he knew she disapproved, but she didn't take a strong stand on it until worried for her own neck. But she found some healing and made some hard choices after seeing where the easy ones got her, and I liked who she was by the end.

The Christian content was very minimal, but the "moral of the story" was consistent with Christian morals. There was no bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this suspenseful and intriguing novel.

I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.
