This review was written for When Mountains Move.
It is 1943, and at only 17, Millie is a young bride of a first-time rancher in the stunning, rugged, and wild state of Colorado. She has moved here with her new love from Mississippi to follow their dream of raising beef cattle and stock horses on land that hasnt been tended for decades. As the couple settles in to a dilapidated house and meet their wary neighbors in the books opening chapters, the reader instinctively knows that more than physical challenges lie ahead.

Cantrell weaves her tale with ease and candor, showing a clear understanding of how difficult it can be for loved ones to communicate with one another when they try to hide painful secrets. But for young Millie, hope arrives in the form of her Choctaw grandmother Oka.

Oka teaches Millie about real Truth: how to embrace life in the present, and to see that pain and suffering from ones past can be transformed into something new, different, and altogether beautiful. She also shows Millie that Love is the great unifier and healer of wounds both in marriage, and in a community. As she explains so poignantly, in her manner of speaking which does not include certain verbs, Who you fight for? Who you die for? Who you risk everything for? You choose. (p. 25)

While the beginning of the novel moved a bit slowly, and I found Millies husbands name - Bump - distracting and unexplained, I was hooked and compelled to finish by mid-way through. The ending satisfied my faith that we reap what we sow, and at the same time, created enough space to show that redemption is possible for everyone, even unto the last breath. I would recommend this book as a pleasurable read, and hope to enjoy more work by Julie Cantrell.

This review was written for When Mountains Move.
This poor couple, not only did they have just the usual first year of marriage problems, they had everything else you could think of thrown at them. These were the days that I would not have wanted to live in. No electricity, no indoor plumbing, no, I like the necessities of life.

The story was good and I really got into it. It was very touching and deep in so many ways. When Bump and Millie move to Colorado out in the middle of nowhere, that is where things are good and bad for them. This was really an entertaining story that kept me glued to the pages. I think there was an overabundance of praying going on, however, I guess I would have been doing the same thing if I were in their shoes. I just can't say enough how much I enjoyed the story and how well it was written. I know I am being redundant, but it seriously was that good.

I want to thank Thomas Nelson and Net Galley for allowing me to read and review this book by providing me a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.

What a wonderful read!!! I can't believe that this book was sitting around waiting to be read when it was such a riveting, thoroughly enjoyable experience!

I received this book, along with the first one, "Into the Free", from the author, with the hope that I would write an honest review. What a pleasure that is for me. I couldn't grade it any higher, but, if there were more stars, I would use them. I didn't think a book could top the New York Times Bestseller that was Book 1, but this one certainly equaled it!

The life that Millicent (Millie) lived, is not one with which I could relate, but this author provided such insight into the details of all that this character went through, that the reader is transported into that time and those events. I would sit down and say that I was only going to read one or two chapters, and, because so many unbelievably traumatic events would occur in each chapter, that I would immediately turn the page to begin the next chapter to see what happens, thus, it would be six or seven chapters before I can pull myself away, and even that was difficult! I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this series. I was not disappointed this book, even though it was not listed as a NYT Bestseller, as was Book #1. It really held up to the reputation of the first book, and held my interest throughout. I really think that it is especially important in this series to read Book 1 first. In some series, a reader is able to read a series book out of order, but, "Into the Free" offers so much detailed happenings to Millie, that makes When Mountains Move so much more enjoyable.

I would WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend this book (and I have) to my reading friends and anyone else who will listen (smile).

This is the sequel to Into the Free, but I decided not to read that book first since it sounded pretty heavy. I read several reviews about it so I could feel that I knew enough of the storyline to start with the second book. The author did a great job of incorporating important details from the first book in a subtle way that was natural to the characters' thoughts. Some of the themes in this book are unpleasant and gave Millie hard things to overcome which enabled intense character growth. The setting sounded amazing- in the wilderness of the Colorado mountains. I appreciated that Millie and Bump are such strong yet vulnerable people and choose each other to have this adventure with. The writing is so evocative, the story and words stayed with me for a few days after. Without giving anything away, I thought the resolution for the villain was awesome.
