Product Description

Hawaii was the last place Grace Christiansen ever imagined she'd vacation, much less fall in love. But when her family surprises her with a cooking retreat in paradise, she is pulled-or maybe yanked-away from her predictable, safe life and thrown headfirst into the adventure of a lifetime.

Max Sharpe may make his living on the ice as a pro hockey player, but he feels most at home in the kitchen. Which is why he lives for the three-week culinary vacation he takes each year in Hawaii. Upon being paired with Grace for a cooking competition, Max finds himself drawn to her passion, confidence, and perseverance. But just when Grace dares to dream of a future beyond her hometown, Max pulls away.

Editorial Reviews

4.5 stars. The newest installment in Warren’s Christiansen Family series is an exquisite romance. The faith message is seamlessly incorporated and truly enhances the story. Profoundly touching on the topic of facing fears, this book is a true gem.
Award-winning Warren (It Had to Be You, 2014) continues her string of stand-alone novels about the Christiansen family. Grace Christiansen has convinced herself that she enjoys her quiet life at home in Deep Haven, Minnesota, but when she is presented with the opportunity to go to Hawaii for an intensive culinary course, she realizes that fear governs her choices. Max Sharpe lives in fear as well, avoiding intimate relationships to concentrate on his pro hockey career. When Grace and Max come together during the cooking course, both realize that their flourishing feelings will be forever stunted if they don’t let go of fear and trust that God has bigger plans than they can perceive. In her latest heartwarming tale of love, faith, and courage, Warren reminds us that although we all put up barriers to protect ourselves, we thrive most when we’re open to both God’s plans and people’s love. Readers who are already enamored of the sprawling Christiansen clan will feel even more connected, while those new to Warren will be brought right into the fold.

I absolutely enjoy reading this series. I feel like I'm reading a real-life story. Susan May Warren does an excellent job making her character easy to relate to and helps her reader to bond with the characters fast.

Grace made such a huge transformation. It was fun to walk alongside her in her journey to become a culinary chef. She has all the talent but couldn't see that for herself. How often do we do just that, too? We can easily discredit ourselves because we don't think we're good enough or because we don't want to get out of our comfort zone. For Grace, getting out of her comfort zone led to some big things happening in her life.

If I had to chose the character that I was most saddened by, it would be Owen. I wanted him to have a repentant heart and care, but I don't feel like that ever happened. I hope Susan May Warren has some big plans for him in the future!

Another thing I've liked about this series is the continuity. Each book flows right into the next one. It makes me want to re-read all 3 together and see what I've missed. I can't wait to see what's next in either this series or a break-off one.

From the first book, I enjoyed the song title idea. But I'd hoped for some real closure with the 3rd book in what I thought was a series [traditionally 3]. Didn't happen. While some hard issues were laid bare and some relationships mended, more were ripped wide-open. Great for on-going story line, not so good for readers who want new, not continuing plots. Yes, I enjoyed the book; so I should not complain, but I'd hoped for some finality.

In the third in the Christiansen saga, Grace goes to Hawaii to a cooking school, compliments of her family. They want to inspire her, recognizing her amazing ability to create incredible foods. She is hesitant to go - she's content at home. But she finally agrees to go and it changes her life.

Also at the cooking school is Max Sharpe, pro hockey player, lover of gourmet cooking. He lives for the three weeks of culinary vacation he takes each year. When he is paired up with Grace for a cooking competition, emotions are stirred. So is his prior relationship to Grace's brother Owen - a relationship that ended Owen's hockey career.

This is a good novel of character development. Grace has the opportunity to grow through all her insecurities, with Max helping. Max struggles with his guilt over his part in the accident that ended Owen's career. They both must rely on their Christian faith to make it to the future God has planned for them.

I appreciate a thought provoking novel and this one makes you think about love, marriage, and life. Would you marry someone knowing they had an incurable disease? What do you do when your marriage doesn't turn out as you'd thought?

I also appreciate a novel where I learn something and in this one, it was about a cooking school and the ensuing contest. Be given a certain number of ingredients and create something tasty from them? Amazing.

I have to admit I was put off by Owen's behavior near the beginning of the book. There was a one night stand with no guilt or remorse from Owen. I know it happens in "Christian" families, but it was just hard to read. I certainly hope Owen finds salvation in a sequel.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through the Litfuse Publicity Group for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

This was the first Christiansen family novel that I have read and I will try to read them all now. I had a hard time putting this book down after the first few chapters. I love the characters. Max and Grace are wonderful and so are the secondary characters that will have their own stories. I like how Susan worked in how people handle a disease. I look forward to many more romances by Susan May Warren. I received this book for a fair and honest opinion from Litfuse Publicity Group.

I really liked this book. I like how this, and the other books in the series, starts with a letter to the Christiansen that the story is going to be focusing on. I think Casper is my favorite character, and I am really looking forward to reading the book about him!
