...I fail to understand how this novel honors Christ. The writing is excellent (much better than the writing of most Christian authors) and the story draws you in. BUT...in a VERY DARK way. If you're fascinated with demons and want to read about them then this book is for you. But I don't see much of a difference between the way the subject is presented here than in secular novels. I'm not a big fan of spending time reading about all things demonic so this book isn't/wasn't for me. I hope the author decides to use her considerable writing talent focusing elsewhere; perhaps choosing to show more of Jesus reflected in peoples' lives than on the demonic.

No doubt about it, Melanie Wells is one talented writer. Her plots are original and well-thought-out, her descriptions vivid and compelling. Character development, however is very much lacking, and the pace of the novel is rapid-fire banter between characters, with a pronounced lack of depth. Dylan Foster, the heroine, is sarcastic and self-absorbed. Written in the first person, almost every page contains musing on her free-spirited nature, and details on her faults, as if they make her unique and humorous. Every third page, it seems, details her obsessive-compulsive need to clean her house and alphabetize her pantry. I found it very hard to like Dylan Foster, and her flippant, irreverent references to God throughout the novel had me cringeing. She bemoans her lack of self-discipline in spiritual matters, explaining that she rarely prays, reads the Bible, or has quiet time, because she is not really a checklist kind of person. She doesn't know how to get rid of a demon who is plaguing her, and this turns into a strange, twisted humor throughout the novels.

I kept hoping this novel would get better, kept hoping each novel in the series would get better, and stuck with the novels because of that, despite putting each book down feeling slightly depressed and empty. Having finished the last one, tonight, I'm left with a bitter taste in my mouth, wondering, how exactly are these novels Christian? How exactly do these novels follow Christ? Multanomah Press, you failed to follow with these novels.

Really enjoyed getting to know this character. Fun first person writing, engages the reader into the life of this woman. She is a Christian woman who understands she needs Christ but so often forgets or choses not to spend time with HIM. Only when life throws her an unexpected demon does she start turning to and relying on God. Please don't expect to be inspired or grown in your faith by reading this book. It is a fictional story, not a devotional. There are no bad words, sex, or vivd violence. Would have no problem letting my young teen boy read this book. Captured my interest, kept me reading. Starting the next in the series.

My first novel by Melanie Wells will not be my last! The entire novel had such a conversational tone to it, you felt as though you were sharing a coffee with Dylan Foster while she shared her life! She was so likeable, self deprecating and genuine, it made her story even more appealing. The story itself...intense, suspenseful, a bit strange, but kept you wanting to find out what happens next! A fabulous read!
