A man with a painful past. A child with a doubtful future. And a shared journey toward healing for both their hearts.
It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girls pretty yellow dress cant quite hide the ugly scar on her chest.
Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he's restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.
Before it's over, they'll both know there are painful reasons why crickets cry . . . and that miracles lurk around unexpected corners.

Martin has created highly developed characters, lifelike dialogue, and a well crafted story. He draws his readers along with just enough details, until the right time when the whole truth about Reeses past is revealed. When Crickets Cry is full of information about the heart, both as a muscle--the result of much research--and as the housing of our souls. Geared toward adults, this book is good reading for the story alone. However, because of its soulful insights, it also would make an excellent addition to any church library as a counseling tool. Janice in GeorgiaAtlanta, GAAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5One of our book club's favorite books!March 16, 2012Janice in GeorgiaAtlanta, GAAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The members of our book club enjoyed this book so much that a few of them have already gone out to buy other books by the same author. WHEN CRICKETS CRY is well written, with lots of symbolism, foreshadowing, literary illusions and a few scripture quotes. We fell in love with these characters. Their problems were relatable, and we suffered right along with them to the final conclusions, rooting for them all the way.
Treeca Adams5 Stars Out Of 5February 19, 2010Treeca Adams"When Crickets Cry," by Charles Martin is perhaps one of the best books I've read in a very long time. I 'read myself to sleep' almost every night of the week and as a retired public school Reading Specialist, I delight in a great new find! In my opinion this is just such a book...and well worth the money.

Bonnie Coon4 Stars Out Of 5December 4, 2009Bonnie CoonThis book captured my attention right from the start. It was well written and I found it hard to put down. However, the ending was a bit disappointing and somewhat confusing. Overall though, I am glad I read it, because it depicted real human emotion. It makes you laugh and cry and I would definitely recommend this book.
