In volume 8, Phil Vischer and his troop of happy puppets summarized the five books called the Writings. In this volume, 9, he thinks they are about to summarize the 17 books called the Prophets, and do it in two 25-minute episodes.

    So how do they do?

They tell what a "prophet" is and some examples of what their hardships. They give the names of prophets already mentioned in the Old Testament, and tell what they do, how others often respond to them, and categories of different kinds of messages they give.

They have some fun along the way, as Sunday School Lady shows she is "kind of groovy" as she does a rhythm and rhyme for the 17 prophetic books.

They give the difference between the major and minor prophets, tell which prophetic books are in which category, and summarize each of the 17 books.

This is just remarkable teaching. It is all too rare to find this quality of instruction even in an adult small groups and Bible instruction classes, but here information is marvelously well-organized, and though it's fast-paced, any age can gain something from it. There is much solid teaching here.

As for fun, at the end, the puppet named Sunday School Lady does her little recitation rhythm and rhyme again, as Clive and Ian, the British brother puppets drive through animated billboards and sing to summarize all 17 of the Prophets with a rap tune that is more than worth the price of the show.

Bonus Features are "Show Outtakes," "Michaels Deleted Scene," and "A Pirates Guide to Church History" tells us about the Edict of Milan in the 300's.

Also, the 17 Prophets are discussed in terms of the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Persians, and the two kingdoms, Northern and Southern using graphics provided by the scientist puppet, Dr. Schniffenhousen.

This is a DVD for all ages, and for anyone, believer or nonbeliever.

It introduces the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. And it does it in just about 1 hour.

At the end, Vischer (creator of the "VeggieTales" series and who is also the genius behind "What's in the Bible?" both writing it and performing the more than 12 puppets and doing all the voices) summarizes the whole Old Testament ("What's in the Bible?" DVDs 1 through 9) with help from his puppet friends. They prepare us for this series' last 4 DVDs on the New Testament, and that includes Jesus being the Messiah.

One puppet asks if that--Jesus being the Messiah--is what were going to talk about next?

    Yes, Vischer says.

Im so excited I cant move, says the puppet Ian.

This series is a tremendous effort by Phil Vischer and his team to make the Bible clear. Bravo!

I began getting these DVDs out of the library but wanted the entire series, so I purchased the 13-volume set, and am reviewing all of them.

What a great ride! I never expected that covering 17 books of the Old Testament in two 45-minute episodes could be so fun and informative. We have watched this episode several times since Christmas and need to watch in several more times to get everything out of #9 that is packed in there. Counting the days until we can get our hands on #10.
