Don't worry, Mom. There's a good reason why your son perplexes you. He's the OPPOSITE sex! Boys really do think, communicate, and process the world differently than girls. But no matter your son's age, he needs you, and he needs you in not-so-apparent ways.
Drawing from her own experiences, as well as those from moms and sons from around the country, Cheri Fuller shares what makes boys and young men tick and how to become a more welcome influence at every stage in their lives. She answers all the top questions, including:
"How can I help my son (and me!) deal with his emotions in a healthy way?"
"School is such a struggle. How can I help him?"
"Our personalities are SO different. How can we get on the same page?"
"My son hardly says a thing. What can I do?"
"What are the best ways to instill good values?"
"How can I encourage a lasting faith in God?"
With page after page of use-it-today advice and encouraging stories, this book will help you steer your son toward becoming a caring, confident young man.
Includes Reflection Questions for Personal or Group Use
Great for understanding grandsons, too!
"Some mother-son relationships seem to add credence to the adage that 'men are from Mars, women are from Venus.' Even mothers who have a
close bond with their sons may think they harbor a complete stranger when their male offspring reach puberty. Fuller is a speaker and author, as well as mother of three (two boys and a girl) and grandmother of six. She lists specific activities that all sons need from their mothers, such as encouragement, communication, prayer, and confidence-building. She adds questions at each chapter's end to 'ponder, journal or discuss,' lending the book to both individual and group study. Recommended for the parenting section of any church library." --Church Libraries
SaraG5 Stars Out Of 5Great book for moms of sons!June 7, 2013SaraGI have two sons. One is getting ready to go to college and the other one is 2 years old. I would have loved this book when my oldest was younger, but I still found it to be good as he is getting ready to leave "the nest." What does he need from me now? And I'm just beginning the parenting journey with the little one.
The book covers the areas of encouraging your son, building confidence, praying for your son, etc. It's easy to read and includes questions to ponder, journal, and discuss at the end of each chapter. It addresses all ages of boys.
Cheri Fuller shares insights into how boys communicate and how a mom can help her son. I appreciated that she said boys will tune you out if you talk too long. I have definitely found this to be try with both my sons and husband.
Cheri talks about understanding your son's personality and ways to stay connected. Maybe it's shooting hoops. Shooting hoops can connect you both and can open communication (or whatever it is your son enjoys). Join him. My son likes to watch movies with me.
I was glad Cheri addressed older sons - letting them go and praying for them. I can see that as my son leaves for college, prayer can be one of the most loving things I can do for him. Parenting our sons is lifelong.
I knew I would like this book as I have liked many others by Cheri Fuller.
I received this book free from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
SC2424VermontAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Helpful!May 8, 2013SC2424VermontAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have just finished reading What a Son Needs From His Mom by Cheri Fuller. This book is just what it sounds like! A great book which helps moms understand/relate to/teach/parent, etc their son(s).
As a female who grew up in a household of sisters, there are times that I look at my son and what he's doing and think, "what IS this weird thing they call a boy?!" :) Just kidding, but truthfully, having a son has really been full of surprises. I love him so much and want to help him grow into the man God intends him to be. There are definitely big differences in raising our daughters and our sons. This book is a wonderful resource for helping me to see my role in his life and for helping me understand some of what makes him, as a boy, so special.
Different sections of the book deal with helping your son as he develops confidence, character, emotions, faith. Sections on praying for your son, listening to your son, encouraging your son. And others. The last sections of the book address "letting go" -- "Releasing your son to manhood." All kinds of topics. It's a great book. I took a long time to read this book, not because it was difficult to read or boring--it definitely was not--truthfully, I just didn't want to miss anything!
It's a valuable book. I would definitely recommend it. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to read this book and will keep it on my shelf with the intention of re-reading it, probably more than once! It is a great book for a mother or grandmother of a boy.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review. I was not required to write a positive review.
mountainsAlberta CanadaAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Mom, you need this book!May 3, 2013mountainsAlberta CanadaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Do you have a son?
Then you will need this book! Cheri Fuller's book is a fantastic resource for any mom trying to raise her son.
From the very beginning of the book I found helpful advice, encouraging words and hundreds of "ah-ha" moments. Fuller's open and honest approach places the reader at ease. She tackles the hard questions with kindness and insight. She balances the technical information with the emotional aspect very well.
Each chapter has Reflection Questions for using in a group setting, or alone allowing you to dig deeper into your own parenting experience. I read the book on my own but could definitely see the value of sharing this book with a group of moms. To hear other moms having the same concerns and issues is encouraging, but it is also to see how boys are all unique as well.
I especially enjoyed the chapter on A Mom Who Stays Connected. This is the area I have struggled with as my teenage son grows and changes and develops interests that aren't as easy to be involved in. The chapter gave me ideas that I could implement TODAY to make a difference in my son's life as well as long term hopes and goals.
A very valuable resource for moms with boys!

SarahNYAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A great resource for moms of boysMay 1, 2013SarahNYAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4When I read the title of this book, I thought to myself, 'hmmm, I might need to have this book on my bookshelf' (well, read it first, then put it on my bookshelf). As a mother of 5 boys, I still have a lot to learn in the mothering boys department. I grew up with one sister, so my boys can be a bit puzzling to me at times, especially when they hit adolescence. My oldest sons are 10 and 8, and I also have two 2-year-old sons and a 4-month-old son. It's easy to mother sons when they are little - they need a caring, nurturing mama to love on them and meet their physical and emotional needs, but once they reach that tween age, things start to change a bit and it's harder for me to relate to them. I was happy to have the opportunity to review Cheri Fuller's latest book, What a Son Needs From His Mom because I want to be able to adequately meet the need's of my sons throughout their lives, not just when they are little.
Through her wisdom and experience from raising two sons, Cheri Fuller encourages other mothers of sons as they take on the task of raising them. She also shares the stories and experiences of other moms and sons and sites expert advice and professional wisdom. The book is just over 200 pages, has 14 chapters, and provides "questions to ponder, journal, or discuss" at the end of each chapter. I liked having the questions at the end as it allowed me to dig deeper into the topic at hand and focus it on our own personal circumstances at home. The book covers the areas of encouraging your son, building confidence in your son, praying for your son, understanding your son's personality and learning style, releasing your son to manhood, and many other important topics.
The book was an easy read; the words flowed nicely and I felt that Cheri was truly sharing her heartfelt stories and advice, mom to mom. You can tell that she genuinely cares, wants to help, and has a heart for other moms of boys. She definitely opened my eyes to a lot of things I never even thought of when it comes to raising my boys. I'm thankful that I had the chance to read and review this book, and I would recommend it to any mom raising a son.
I received this book from Bethany House in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated in any other way.
mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5Great book for Moms of boysApril 25, 2013mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Cheri Fuller is an inspirational speaker and award-winning author of over 40 books including The Mom You're Meant to Be: Loving Your Kids While Leaning on God and the bestselling When Mothers Pray. Her books have been translated into many languages and her speaking ministry provides encouragement to people throughout the world.
I think as a Dad, I'm the exception to the rule of the gender who buys and reads parenting books. I love my Doctor Spock and refer to every time my kid acts sick or weird. More often it is the Mother who reads up on child behavior; and I think especially when there is a difference between the sexes like between Mother and Son, a book like this is needed.
Fuller is both Mother and Grandmother and so she brings a lot of experience to her book and it is rich with her own stories and anecdotes_.a nd this is not some "bite-sized" devotional either. Reading this book will have you reaching for your pen, circling entire paragraphs and have you thinking that it's one of those books you'll have to read again as your son continues to grow.
Fuller's book is quite extensive and offers a wide range of subjects Her chapters include how to give your son confidence, how you can help him overcome his fears. How you can understand your son's personality and how you can help him develop his character.
As a Christian, Fuller will also offer her advice in helping Mothers raise sons with a mature faith and to pursue a life of purpose.
This is a great book and well needed in today' world
Thank you to Bethany House for this review copy for a fair and honest review.
