What Is God Really Like?, edited by Craig Groeschel, aims to answer the question posed by its title. All too often, Groeschel indicates in his introduction, people are satisfied with simply knowing about God, instead of actually knowing Him. Employing seventeen different authors and pastors including Francis Chan and Stovall Weems, the book seeks to encourage seekers, both new Christians and long-time believers alike, to desire a deeper relationship with God. The book is divided into seventeen chapters, each with a different author and a different aspect of God. The sections were compiled by Groeschel, the pastor who started ONE PRAYER: a month-long campaign to unite churches through prayer and local community service. He collected the sections from the pastors of the many churches involved in ONE PRAYER. Francis Chan is the author of the best-selling book Crazy Love, and Stovall Weems is senior pastor of Celebration Church in Jacksonville, FL.

Francis Chan writes about God being strong. The Bible describes God as being strong, but Chan finds that today, his followers, or as Chan says, his “children” are weak and scared. He then encourages the readers to have confidence in God and to remember that they are very powerful because the Holy Spirit lives inside of them. Stovall Weems focuses on God as merciful. He describes God’s infinite love and forgiveness, describing how it influenced his own Christian walk. He then reminds the reader that God’s mercy is vast, so vast that no one can do anything that is unforgivable, quoting from Psalm 103:11, “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him.”

What Is God Really Like? is a very impressive book and enjoyable to read. It is a book written for the layman. It doesn’t attempt to be a deep theological thesis; it simply tries to describe God in ways that are easy to understand. I highly recommend it. – Nathan Sturgis, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
