Publisher's Description

There's a lot of confusion about what faith is. It is something defines as trust, sometimes as hope, and often as blind belief. This booklet looks at the biblical definition of faith and the glorious examples of it in Hebrews 11. It is rare to find a book in the market that focuses so narrowly on this topic. We hope it will hold up a mirror by which readers can evaluate whether they have the genuine article.

Dr. R. C. Sproul's What is Faith? focuses on one of the foundational concepts of the Christian faith, and also one of the hardest to understand. Does the word faith refer to an attitude of hope, a commitment to trust, or something else? In this book, celebrated theologian Dr. Sproul concisely explores the concept of faith in Christianity. His insights include examinations of trust, belief, one’s natural understanding of a deity, loyalty, and conscious acceptance of a higher power.

Even though this booklet is not even seventy pages, it does an excellent job of pinpointing the key aspects of faith, while anticipating questions most people have about what may seem an ambiguous topic. By referring to specific passages of Scripture and by delving deeply into the teachings of Christ on the topic of faith, Dr. Sproul provides concrete logic to an abstract philosophical challenge. Those who are strong in their faith will find support here for their beliefs, and those who seek evidence for a rationale for engaging in faith will find the foundation they’ve been seeking. – Aaron Johnson, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

There was no question that Sproul would base this book of the series on Hebrews 11. As Scripture states: "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Sproul spends a lengthy amount of time diving into the examples of faith described in Hebrews 11. Included in this list is Abel, Noah, Abraham, Enoch, Sarah, Moses' parents, and Moses. Since the bible is a historical story of our Christian family, he enlightens us to the personal aspect we hold in each experience. He explains each example of faith in a tactic that offers a sense of confidence that we, too, have the ability to demonstrate faith in a powerful way. He does a fabulous job of highlighting the Old Testament details of each illustration, subsequently providing weightier evidence for his definition of faith.

He continues by explaining what faith truly is according to the Bible. "Faith is not believing in God. It's believing God." How incredibly powerful one tiny word can be in our perspective of faith! Essentially the prevailing belief among Christians is that our belief in the "being" of God is the ultimate aspect of our faith. Sproul persuasively discredits this thought by stating that biblical faith is grounded in the way we respond to the commands of God. He adds that such faith is active and living, requiring our full attention and commitment.

He touches on his expert theological background by addressing one of the most misunderstand aspects of faith: it is a gift from God. He references The Westminster Confession of Faith (another event I was unaware of until this book) as he details the steps one follows to be regenerated. In other words, he spells out the biblical order of salvation. Ultimately, our faith is a gift provided by a generous and loving God and not a result of our own doing.

He concludes by highlighting the connection between faith and the Word of God. The growth of one's faith is essential to their time in the Word. When we are halted by an obstacle, where do we flee? Sproul wisely advises: "...when you are not sure of where you stand with the things of God, flee to the Scriptures." This is the only way one's faith will be strengthened.

Once again, Sproul presents a theological topic in a condensed, easy to understand booklet. Any new believer would gain essential wisdom and any mature believer would receive many wise reminders.
