Tell us a little about yourself. I am currently writing a series of elessons to be offered through my website. The first one is titled "Hollywood or History" and looks at the impact of cattle drives, cowboys, westward movement of the railroads as well as farmers, barbed wire and towns. It is going to be so much fun while teaching map skills, cultural geography and math skills. Can you imagine having an income of several hundreds of thousands of dollars pre-income tax! Cattle barons were not only wealthy but powerful politically and culturally.
What was your motivation behind this project? I never used a textbook as a teacher simply because they were so poorly written, so boring, so overwhelming and truly just plain bad. John Saxon was my neighbor and best friend. Those of you who know of John know when he set his mind to something it came to pass. And I was one of his pet projects. He read every word I wrote, had a lot to say about my choice of topics and never ceased to amaze me with his broad knowledge of history and geography.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope students will rekindle their love of learning, become life-long students and never tire of knowing why things work the way they do.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Being a Christian I wanted desperately to write a good quality geography book. Writing can become overwhelming but in the end when you listen to your students ideas and listen to the praise they give to our Father for this wonderful planet we call home, it is worth all the years of research, hours and hours of writing, rewriting, and worrying that you have left something out! I tell my students that becoming a critical thinker, looking at both sides of the issues and being grounded in the word of God is a powerful combination. That is why we are the hope for the future of our country. We can and will think for ourselves following the Word.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? John Saxon instilled in me a work ethic that never takes a short cut. I am appalled at the revisionist teachings of mainstream textbooks and believe that we as homeschoolers bear a tremendous burden to lead the way back to our Founding Fathers, why we came to this unknown land and how we made it blossom. We came for freedom and it is no small task to protect our freedoms in this modern world.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I have been teaching with The Potters School for several years now and recommend it to anyone who would like to have an outstanding faculty enrich their student's journey.
