Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am an ordained minister with 23 years experience in congregational leadership in rural, urban, and suburban churches. I am Coordinator of the Pastoral Ministry Program for the Kern Family Foundation in Waukesha, WI. I have served as senior pastor for congregations in Michigan and Indiana and was a consultant with the Lilly Endowment funded Indianapolis Center for Congregations. As a consultant for churches and congregations for nearly ten years, I conduct leadership development workshops and services where I share principles for maintaining a healthy, enduring, and productive church. I am also the founder of Church Over 40 (www.ChurchOver40.com), an organization designed to develop clergy and lay people in churches that have been in existence for over forty years and are seeking to partner with God for renewal. I am a member of the Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter of the American Society for raining and Development and the Ministers Council of the American Baptist Churches, U.S.A. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL and a Master of Divinity degree with honors from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Chicago. In 2001 I completed the three-year Beeson Institute for Advanced Church Leadership through Asbury Theological Seminary. I've been married 24 years; Judy and I are parents to three teenaged children.

What was your motivation behind this project?  A new pastor has at least one YES from each member. Wise pastors use that YES to encourage their members to connect with God. Many Christians know that they should be having a daily devotional time, but they need encouragement to follow through. Welcome, Pastor gets people reading their Bibles and journaling each day. ADULT SPIRITUAL PRACTICES are the key to church renewal, so this process produces benefits long beyond start-up.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  During 23 years of working with pastors and congregations, I noticed that if a pastor, associate pastor, or ministry program specialist (Music Minister, Youth Pastor) got off on the wrong foot with a congregation, it almost always came to a bad end. It may blow up in a few months, or it may lurch to a miserable conclusion years later. But it never becomes what it could have been. I wrote Welcome, Pastor! because start up is crucial and I wanted to provide a resource for pastors in new congregations. There is tremendous positive spiritual ENERGY available when a pastor arrives to begin a new ministry in a congregation. The goal of the Welcome, Pastor process is to harness that energy and direct it toward the congregation’s most immediate and pressing challenge: building a solid foundation for the new pastor-congregation partnership. We harness this energy through DEVOTIONS and DIALOGUE. The DEVOTIONS shine the light of God’s Word on the specific challenges of successful start-up. It anchors people in the time-tested habits that promote spiritual renewal: reading the Bible, reflecting on the meaning in light of one’s situation, and a brief journal entry each day. DIALOGUE gets the pastor and people listening to and speaking with each other about what God is saying to them through the Scripture and the Spirit. In 40 days, the four challenges of start-up receive ten biblical devotions each: 1. Get to know one another by sharing love and laughter, hurts and hopes. 2. Share faith honestly and authentically. 3. Discern what God expects of us as pastor and people. 4. Speak openly about differences in order to handle them constructively. Every ten days participants gather to dialogue about what they are learning, and the book provides complete instructions for these dialogue meetings.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I have been influenced by great devotional writers and some of America's leading pastors.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Welcome, Pastor! is the first and only book to offer a clear, simple process for new pastors and congregations who want to build a productive partnership. The entire church can participate. The number of people willing to pray for/with the new pastor may surprise you!
