A Positive Way to Grow
I read this book over the past couple of days. At first I thought the methods he suggested were sorta simplistic (like "serve someone in a practical way"), but the further I got into this book, the more I could see how following the challenges in it would work.
This book would make an excellent book to give to somone feeling like there's no way they could improve their relationship with God (but they still want to) or those who were just beginning their walk with the Lord. Either way--some things you might find you already do. Some might surprise you. And several will cause you to stop and think and grow.
I loved one particular phrase in the book: "Part of growing closer to God is learning how to love Him more than you love His blessings."
Wow, what a concept! Can we love Him more than we love His blessings? I hope so. If my job is pulled out from under me, if the market goes south with all my investments, if I lose my home, if someone I love dies, if I become seriously ill--will I still praise and love God?
40 Ways isn't listed as such, but in my ever-so-humble opinion, this would make an excellent Bible Study. There's nothing quite as maturing as gathering with other Christians and mentoring each other. One may have greater strengths here, another there. Together we make a stronger chord than any person working alone.
Thanks, Chip aka Jerry!

Who doesn't want to get closer to God? It seems to be my desire the older I get. This life has a way of beating us up a bit. Without God ~ I would never have made it this far. I am so thankful that I accepted Christ as my Saviour as a young girl. Since then it has been a journey I would not have wanted to miss~ but it has not always been a walk in the park. I have found the closer I am to God the less the trials and troubles of this world affect me.
I love a good devotional book. This book is written as a 40 day challenge. The devotions are practical but yet they go deep into your heart and cause you to do some thinking. I can't say enough how I impressed I am with this book. At the end of each day is a challenge for you to complete. I think this is the best devotional I have read in a long time. Great Book!

Nice little book!
I love devotionals. ItâÂÂs nice to be able to pick up a book in the midst of my crazy-busy life and be reminded how much God loves me. Of course my Bible does the job, but sometimes itâÂÂs nice to have some additional stories and ideas and encouragement to go along with it.
When I received 40 Ways to Get Closer to God, I especially loved its compact size. The book is divided into short little chapters which lead you through 40 days, each concentrating on a specific topic or idea. Beginning with a quote, then taking you through a couple of pages of focus on the subject, each day ends with âÂÂTodayâÂÂs ChallengeâÂÂ, a place to check off that youâÂÂve completed the challenge, and a few lines for notes. This little book is meant to be used, written in, studied alongside your Bible, and your life.
There is some great life application stories in the book, as well as some nice encouragement, scriptural lessons, and thought provoking questions. There are also some great ideas and activities for practical ways to live a life of fulfillment, serving others, and drawing closer to the Heavenly Father.
My personal opinion of the book- a little dry, and nothing really âÂÂnewâ to me here as a Bible study-devotional-christianbook connoisseur. But thatâÂÂs not to say itâÂÂs not a great little book. It would be especially good for a new christian, couple study, young adult, or even something to share with your teens using it in homeschool or family time. It would also make a super gift for a new grad, or any other Christian friend or family.
*I received this book from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review. No other compensation was received and opinions are my own.
