Tell us a little about yourself. I'm a pastor and elder of Xenos Christian Fellowship of Dayton, a freelance magazine journalist (articles at clemboyd.com), author, husband and father.
What was your motivation behind this project? I wanted to demystify the idea that following God was just a pursuit for the super-holy and devout, but that it was desirable and accessible for anyone - the car salesman, the stay at home mom, the retired electrical engineer, the college student - anyone who was willing to say to God, "Let's go for it!"
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I had three goals: 1) Help people who did not have a personal relationship with Christ receive God's forgiveness through Jesus or get closer to that decision; 2) Inspire Christians to center their decision making in all areas of life around their relationship with Christ; 3) Give readers tools and examples for how to walk with God from their current situation into the riches of a life completely surrendered to him.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Even though I was writing the book for others, I found the project confirming of choices I made. It helped me remember why I had done some of the things I'd done. Everyone goes through doubts but writing the book helped allay those doubts. Plus, its just inspiring to talk with people who have turned over their whole lives to God. What a privilege to share their stories.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I was inspired by my own relationship with God and by his book, the Bible. My wife Julia and three children David, Bethany and Mark inspire me every day. Brothers and sisters in the Lord inspire me with their decisions to follow Christ in spite of great costs. I have found inspiration in the devotional My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers, the teachings of Dennis McCallum and Gary DeLashmutt at Xenos Christian Fellowship in Columbus, OH, books such as Living Proof by Jim Petersen, The Call by Os Guinness, Sit, Walk, Stand by Watchman Nee, musical artists such as Wayne Watson, Steven Curtis Chapman and Petra.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I don't view myself as an expert at this topic, just a fellow traveler who happens to ask lots and lots of questions. My prayer is that the example of my life and the lives of many others helps them trust God even more. He's worth the risk.
