Tell us a little about yourself. I'm a Wheaton College graduate ('95) with
degrees in literature and Christian education; I served in fulltime youth ministry for 7 years before launching my writing and speaking career. My first book was Walking with Frodo: A Devotional Journey through The Lord of the
Rings (Tyndale) which surprised everybody (including me!) by becoming a bestselling during Christmas 2003. For fun, I serve on the board of the Northern Michigan C.S. Lewis Festival (www.cslewisfestival.org); and my husband and I love swing dancing. This summer I moved from northern Michigan to Durham, NC where my husband is a graduate student at Duke University.
What was your motivation behind this project? My readers were asking if I'd do more stuff
like Walking with Frodo, and as soon as the Narnia movie was seriously underway, it became obvious that this book needed to be done this year. But it was also personally enjoyable for me to study my favorite author and dive into Narnia some more. Do I have a fun job, or what?!
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Teens are smart enough to figure out the
spiritual themes in the Narnian chronicles
without my help, so my main goal was to
introduce them - through discussions about
those themes - to some of C.S. Lewis's other writings. So in the chapter on Edmund and temptation, for example, I also talk about the theme of temptation in The Screwtape Letters. Hopefully students will then be encouraged to tackle Lewis's other works, which can accompany them for the rest of their lives as they mature
in faith.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Hands down, C.S. Lewis has had the greatest
impact on both my Christian imagination and my intellect. I've been reading his Narnian
chronicles ever since my father first started reading them to us as children, and as a young adult I dove into his science fiction trilogy and apologetics. All of my books so far (Walking with Frodo, Walking with Bilbo, and even Dating Mr. Darcy) demonstrate Lewis's influence on my life. But as far as living people are concerned, my parents, grandparents, and husband have helped me become "rooted and established" in the
love of Jesus.
