Publisher's Description

In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, Lois Tverberg challenges readers to follow their Rabbi more closely by re-examining his words in the light of their Jewish context. Doing so will provide a richer, deeper understanding of his ministry, compelling us to live differently, to become more Christ-like. We'll begin to understand why his first Jewish disciples abandoned everything to follow him, to live out his commands. Our modern society, with its individualism and materialism, is very different than the tight-knit, family-oriented setting Jesus lived and taught in. What wisdom can we glean from his Eastern, biblical attitude toward life? How can knowing Jesus within this context shed light on his teachings for us today? In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus we'll journey back in time to eavesdrop on the conversations that arose among the rabbis of Jesus' day, and consider how hearing Rabbi Jesus with the ears of a first-century disciple can bring new meaning to our faith. And we'll listen to Jewish thinkers through the ages, discovering how ideas that germinated in Jesus' time have borne fruit. Doing so will yield fresh, practical insights for following our Rabbi's teachings from a Jewish point of view.

Lois Tverberg's Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus is no leisurely stroll. If you're looking for something deep that will force you to think and see God's Word in a whole new way, you've found it. Studying the words of Christ isn't new to Christians, but Tverberg takes readers back in history to the ancient world in which Jesus taught and shows how Christ's instructions related to his specific audience and, similarly, to us today.

Specifically, this book's three parts take readers through hearing, living, and reading the words of Jesus in the context of first-century Jewish culture. The three-way division of looking at Christ's teachings made it very easy to grasp and understand the applications every step of the way. Tverberg has much experience herself with this subject as cofounder of the En-Gedi Resource Center, an educational ministry that focuses on Christian understanding in its ancient cultural context.

Complete with compelling stories and understandable comparisons to situations today, this book is relevant and challenging. It looks at questions such as, "What did it mean to Jewish listeners when Jesus said to love the Lord with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength?" and "What are the deeper implications from Jesus' teachings on prayer?"

Thought provoking and deep, this book is bottom-line amazing. It feels like you're peeking behind the curtain of pure wisdom and into the solid meaning within Christ's words. I would definitely recommend this book for teens on up who want to go deeper in their faith. Don't be afraid of a little first-century dust. - Lyndsey Gammage, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
