Thoreau's Walking was written shortly before his death in May, 1862. In this charming little book, Thoreau treats his subjects as if it were a walk itself. As he wanders, so do his thoughts. Thoreau believed he was born to walk, and he walked both for exercise of mind and body and as a way of exploring his inner and outer world. Walking was posthumously published in the Atlantic Monthly in June of 1862. Later it was published as part of a larger collection of essays, Excursions, in October of 1863.
